"March is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness, spark action, and highlight the importance of early diagnosis in ovarian cancer." C the Signs blog about how their new digital tool is helping diagnose ovarian cancer earlier. "Ovarian cancer is one of the hardest cancers to detect early, affecting around 7,500 women and people with gynae organs in the UK each year. It is also the sixth most common cause of cancer-related deaths in women. But at C the Signs, we believe in changing the narrative, because early diagnosis can save lives. When caught at stage 1, 98% of women survive at least a year, compared to just 54% at stage 4. Ovarian cancer symptoms can be vague: bloating, stomach pain, feeling full quickly, or needing to wee (urinate) more often. These symptoms can often be mistaken for less serious conditions, leading to delays in diagnosis. Research shows that even a one-month delay in diagnosing cancer can increase the risk of death by 1 in 10. C the Signs is a pan-cancer AI platform that is used across more than 1,500 GP practices in the UK. So far it has detected over 45,000 cancers across more than 50 cancer types. Our clinical decision support system (CDSS) is designed to empower GPs by helping them identify cancer risk in real time. It analyses symptoms, risk factors, and test results in seconds. This means that patients who need urgent investigations or referrals are identified sooner, when treatment is most effective. The results, published in the Journal of Cancer Policy, showed the number of women diagnosed at an early stage of ovarian cancer increased from around 1 in 5 (21.7%) before C the Signs was implemented to around 1 in 3 (33.3%) after C the Signs was implemented. A rise of 53.3%. This shift in the stage of diagnosis means more women are diagnosed at a stage when treatment has the greatest chance of success. This can increase survival rates and improve quality of life. This is the difference early detection makes." This International Women’s Day, we need more than awareness - we need action. The theme for #IWD2025 is Accelerate Action, because progress on gender equality isn’t about words, it’s about real change. In healthcare, women still face delayed diagnoses, disparities in access, and systemic barriers to care - and nowhere is this more urgent than in cancer. Women remain underrepresented in clinical research, experience longer diagnostic timelines, and too often have their symptoms dismissed. These delays cost lives. This isn’t just a conversation; it’s a call to action. Policy, legislation, and systemic change must ensure that every woman, regardless of background, has access to the early detection, treatment, and care she deserves. At C the Signs, we’re working to change this - leveraging AI to detect cancer earlier, reduce time to diagnosis, and ensure women don’t slip through the cracks. But technology alone isn’t enough. Closing the gap in cancer outcomes requires collaboration across research, policy, and innovation to dismantle bias and drive real impact. Research has consistently shown that what we eat can influence cancer risk. While fruits, vegetables, and whole grains are linked to better health outcomes, some foods, especially red and processed meats, are associated with an increased cancer risk, particularly bowel cancer. We are thrilled to be expanding C the Signs and increasing our reach to support even more patients and GPs. Thanks to our partnership with Pennine GP Alliance, nhs west yorkshire integrated care board, and West Yorkshire and Harrogate Cancer Alliance, C the Signs has now launched across GP practices in Calderdale! 🙌 This means more patients will benefit from faster, more accurate assessments and streamlined referrals, ensuring those at risk of cancer receive the right care as quickly as possible. As Will Menzies ACMA CGMA, Chief Executive of Pennine GP Alliance, shared, C the Signs "is already becoming an essential tool for supporting GPs in assessing cancer risks and getting patients the right care as soon as possible." While Jason Pawluk, Programme Director of the West Yorkshire and Harrogate Cancer Alliance, emphasised the impact of clinical decision support tools: "These tools make an important contribution both to reassuring worried people that they do not have cancer, as well as getting those who might seen by specialists as quickly as possible." We are thrilled to share that we will be presenting our research today at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Genitourinary Cancers Symposium! With prostate cancer screening in the spotlight following Sir Chris Hoy’s story and ongoing national discussions, there’s a growing need for more targeted approaches to early detection. Our study, leveraging the Mayo Clinic Platform, shows how C the Signs can help address this challenge by identifying high-risk individuals earlier and more accurately. Our model flagged 31.8% of prostate cancer cases up to five years before traditional diagnoses. With prostate screening challenges being widely debated by Prostate Cancer UK and others, this research highlights how AI can support more precise, risk-based detection strategies, ensuring the right patients get tested at the right time. Following our presentation at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Gastrointestinal Cancers Symposium, we’re thrilled to see our study featured in Inside Precision Medicine! 🙌 Our recent research, in partnership with Mayo Clinic Platform, highlighted the power of C the Signs in detecting colorectal cancer earlier. The retrospective analysis using patient record data revealed that the C the Signs platform identified 29.4% of patients as high-risk up to five years before their diagnosis, with 93.8% sensitivity. By analysing patterns in symptoms and medical data, the platform helps catch patients who might otherwise be missed by traditional screening.
