Today is World Mental Health Day, and this year the theme is mental health in the workplace. For schools and colleges, this means not only supporting the mental wellbeing of students, but also the wellbeing of our staff. Work can have a huge impact on our mental health. It can be good for us, giving us a sense of purpose, boosting our self-worth, and providing opportunities to network. However, for some it can also be a source of stress and anxiety which may contribute to developing or worsening mental health problems. If you are feeling in need of support, it's important to reach out and talk about how you are feeling: - Choose someone you trust to talk to - this could be a friend, family member or colleague. - Think about the best place to talk - this should be an environment in which you are comfortable and relaxed in. - Prepare yourself for their reaction - they may not react in the way you anticipated, or they may not fully understand you at first. Try to give them time to process what you've told them. - Most importantly be kind to yourself. #WorldMentalHealthDay #BeKind #MentalHealthAwareness Sources: mentalhealth.org.uk, mind.org.uk, mentalhealth-uk.org, who.int

Success is a journey, not a destination, as famously quoted by Arthur Ashe, Speech and Language Therapy is a journey of learning and development for our students. By setting communication goals and targets and completing regular assessments and reviews, we are proud to see our student’s confidence grow with the support of our Speech and Language Therapists. We would like to extend a special thank you to Nicole, for sharing her experiences in the great work she does to support our students. Potterspury Lodge School were proud to host a Macmillan coffee morning, on Friday 27th September. Staff and students had spent the week baking and discussing the cakes and treats they were going to bring in. Some of the students had set up stalls to surprise parents with what they had been baking all week. The school had a tombola and a raffle. The presents were amazing, ranging from an AEG toaster to Looney Tunes pens! As a school they raised £240. This is a phenomenal achievement for they community who know that the money will be greatly received by Macmillian cancer support charity to fund all of the amazing work that they do. Potterspury Lodge School would like to thank all of the carers and parents that attended the event and look forward to hosting more charitable events in the future. #Charity #Donate #Fundraising #Community #Support #GivingBack See comments below for a link to the Potterspury Lodge School website.

This month, we would like to raise awareness of ADHD by sharing some information on what ADHD is, common signs of ADHD and how to support those with ADHD. What is ADHD? Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition. ADHD affects how the brain functions, which in turn can impact how the person acts and experiences the world. ADHD is not a mental health condition or a learning disability, but having ADHD might affect a person’s mental health, and some people with ADHD might also have mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression. ADHD can affect people differently, typically those with ADHD could experience the following: - Inattentiveness of distractibility – where people may have trouble focusing for long periods of time. - Hyperactivity and impulsivity – feeling over active and not think before saying or doing things. - Combined ADHD – a combination of both. ADHD can be diagnosed at any age, at any time. Some people don’t realise they have ADHD until later in life. ADHD can also be associated alongside Autism, and is a condition experienced by some of the young people in our care. #ADHD #Autism #ADHDAwareness #ASD Sources: Dignityhealth.org, Gov.uk, verywellmind.com, NHS.UK, Youngminds.org.uk, ADHDcentre.co.uk

Speech and Language Therapy Parents/Carers, and families play a key part in the therapy process as they fully understand our students background and personality. This can be extremely helpful in understanding needs and difficulties, learning preferences and styles, for example whether or not the student is comfortable learning in group environment. Keeping families engaged in this process enables them to see how their child is progressing, and to experience improved communication over time.
