Supporting children and families affected by childhood cancer across Yorkshire and investing in research.
About us
Each year, over 150 children in Yorkshire are diagnosed with cancer. When a child is diagnosed, lives are turned upside down instantly: not just for the child but the entire family. Getting well again can be a long and challenging journey, emotionally, physically, and financially. Supporting children and families throughout that journey is why our charity, Candlelighters, was formed more than 45 years ago. Our mission is to bring light to every family affected by childhood cancer across Yorkshire by providing emotional, practical and financial support, as well as bringing hope, by investing in vital research to improve the outcomes and lives of children with cancer.

We’re delighted to announce we’ve been shortlisted for the Community Impact Award at this year’s Connect Yorkshire Awards, and our CEO, Emily Wragg, has also been recognised in the Inspirational Leader category! 🤩 Emily says, “I am so proud of the amazing team we have at Candlelighters and the work they do every day to support families experiencing what is often the most challenging period of their lives. For this to be acknowledged in the wider community is wonderful. We hope it helps raise awareness of the impact of childhood cancer and encourages even more of the wonderful Yorkshire community to help us provide support to those children and their families. As experts in supporting children with cancer and their families, we are constantly aware of the devastating impact a childhood diagnosis of the disease can have. It’s vital to us to provide the comprehensive support that families living with a childhood diagnosis of cancer need and eventually improve the outcomes and lives of children with cancer by also investing in vital research. We’re grateful to Connect Yorkshire for recognising the wide-ranging impact of our work.” The winners of this year’s Connect Yorkshire Awards will be announced at a prestigious black-tie dinner at the Royal Armouries in Leeds on 28th November. Keep your fingers crossed for us! 💕

We would like to say a massive thank you to everyone who took part in the 150 miles challenge for Childhood Cancer Awareness Month! We're delighted to say that the campaign raised over £41,000! 🤩 Thanks to every incredible individual who took part, this amount could keep our home away from home, The Cottage, running for over two and a half years, keeping families together near their child on the ward. Here is a montage of some of the wonderful photos that were sent to us throughout the challenge, including lots of fantastic sights and adorable dog photos! You're all absolutely amazing. 💕

October is Free Wills Month, meaning you can write your will for free with our free will writing service. 💚 Wills are important to protect your family, but is often something that people put off because they think it's time-consuming and expensive. We've worked with our partner, Bequeathed, to provide a way for families and supporters to make their will easily online, for free, to give security for the future. You can also choose to leave a gift in your will for Candlelighters. Whether this is big or small, gifts in wills are a very special way to protect the future for children with cancer. By leaving a donation to Candlelighters in your will, you are leaving a lasting legacy that will help us continue to invest in life-changing research, and support future generations of children and families facing childhood cancer – from diagnosis to recovery and beyond. 💕 Find out more at: https://lnkd.in/eZkGFydR

We are pleased to announce our new Champ's Champions member… Ford Campbell Freedman Limited! 🥳 At the start of the year, the Leeds-based accountancy firm decided to support Candlelighters this year and get involved in various fundraising activities, including Pink It Up Week and, more recently, the Yorkshire Three Peaks. This year they have raised £2,200 and their vital support allows us to continue providing emotional, practical and financial support when families need it most. The amount raised could enable ten children to receive talking therapy sessions to help them work through their feelings, worries and anxieties. We can’t thank the team enough for all of their support this year, and we can’t wait to see what challenge they take on next! If you want to join Champ's Champions or are interested in finding out more, visit our website at https://lnkd.in/ez_HViva or get in touch with our Partnerships Executive, Iain Blackwood Hobbs, at iain.bh@candlelighters.org.uk. 🤩

His route, along the Great Glen Trail, had him experiencing Scotland’s wonderful scenery and battling against Scotland’s famous midges! We want to thank our brilliant Club Candlelighters member, Mowgli Street Food 🌟 Last year, the very tasty Indian street food branch in Leeds joined Club Candlelighters by becoming Transformers and pledged to raise £25,000 a year for three years. In their first year they raised £26,394! Mowgli support Candlelighters by adding an optional £1 on the bill for their customers and the team get involved with various fundraising activities like Total Warrior. As well as raising vital funds and telling their customers all about Candlelighters, the team have hosted some of our family support groups, including a Mowgli Masterclass with our families and our Grandparents wreath-making workshops at Christmas. We're so grateful to the Mowgli Leeds team for all that they do to make a difference for families in Yorkshire affected by childhood cancer. Since the restaurant opened in 2020, they have raised an incredible £65,000! Club Candlelighters is a way for donors to make impactful contributions to our charity’s mission, over a sustained period. Club Candlelighters plays a significant role in protecting, improving and expanding our services, as well as in our ambition to invest further into research to improve the lives and outcomes of children with cancer – not just in Yorkshire but worldwide. 🌎 For more information on joining Club Candlelighters, contact our Partnerships Executive, Iain Blackwood Hobbs, by emailing iain.bh@candlelighters.org.uk 💫
