Sometimes innovation looks more like curation than creation. It often happens on the periphery – in the surprising and unexpected ways people use your product. A great example of this is the concept of desire paths. You’ve probably seen them in parks, where the official pathways are neatly paved, but then there’s a well-worn trail cutting across the grass – the route people actually prefer to take. In product innovation, these desire paths are everywhere. When I visit our partners, I see how they’re using our products in ways we never anticipated. This week, I visited one such example with my team (pictured: Peter Snell Jonny Viner Onyinye N.) on the Suffolk coast. The Debt Centre was augmenting its capacity by upskilling a team with financial capability tools and providing holistic care. Experiencing these innovations first-hand allows us to ask: how might we add value to this, and how can we replicate it? Instead of trying to control innovation, we should focus on cultivating and curating the best ideas – then amplifying them to benefit others. That’s the kind of innovation I get excited about – not just inventing, but learning from the real-world creativity of those we serve and serve alongside. How do you surface desire paths in your product/work?
