The war in Sudan has created the world's largest displacement crisis as people flee the fighting. Our local partners are working to support both displaced people and the communities hosting them. For example, by distributing hygiene kits that minimise the risk of disease spreading and we're providing centrifugal pumps to improve the water supply. https://lnkd.in/dy4PKyGz

Emergency response is about more than just survival. As part of Caritas Internationalis, CAFOD is part of a network present in 200 countries – with our partners we can stand with communities in the long term – to prepare, survive and rebuild after a crisis. Every Second Counts is CAFOD's philanthropy initiative that aims to raise £7 million over the next four years to empower our partners to swiftly and effectively respond to crises worldwide, whether they make the headlines or not. When Every Second Counts, why wait? Find out more: https://lnkd.in/d4AMpDZJ #emergency #humanitarian #philanthropy

Using plastic waste to stop plastic waste. ♻️ In Bolivia, our local partner has created a system where plastic bottles are repurposed and turned into a barrier that captures waste floating down the Katari River. It has shown that around 7 tonnes of waste are dumped per year into the rivers. Local municipalities have supported the project and there are plans for a second barrier in the Seco River.

We continue to monitor the UK government suspending some arms licences to Israel. Yesterday we joined 17 other organisations to recognise the government has made a welcome step forward in holding Israel accountable for its actions in Gaza – but has not gone far enough.

    • A total ban on arms sales to Israel is the only way to make sure that British-made weapons are not used to breach international humanitarian law. As Pope Francis tells us, peace can never be achieved through weapons – and we echo his call that it’s time to put an end to this situation, through an immediate ceasefire and continued peace talks, the release of all hostages and sufficient aid for the people of Gaza.

I was in Parliament today as CAFOD , Christian Aid and Debt Justice were hosting an event to discuss action this government can take to tackle the injustice of international debt, especially to that owed to private creditors. Here I am with Dame Sarah Mullalley, chair of Christian Aid and Heidi Chow, CEO of Debt Justice. It’s great to be working together on this issue. There is real momentum growing, and it’s going to increase as 2025 will be a year of Jubilee in the Catholic Church. Watch this space!

Last year, Meera shared with you how her children fell seriously ill after the 2022 Pakistan floods and how she sought free medical care from CAFOD’s local organisation. Now, Meera and her 2-year-old are healthy, but economic challenges persist. Meera spoke of our support: "This assistance was invaluable to me and my family, especially during a time when we were struggling financially, and I was also pregnant." "Hope, to me, is the belief that our circumstances will improve, leading to a better life. It means envisioning a future where we have a permanent home, my children can receive a proper education, and we no longer have to live with uncertainty." https://lnkd.in/du5GrD85

Smallholder farmers in Cajamarca, Colombia continue to stand for their rights. CAFOD, and other CIDSE organisations are supporting their 7-year struggle in a David vs Goliath battle. An overwhelming 98 per cent of the population of Cajamarca, Colombia, voted to reject mining in the area in 2017, yet Colombian authorities and the mining corporation are still disputing the validity of the results. https://lnkd.in/eHrduWbb
