About us
Drawing on the experience of Cara's two earlier Programmes, for Iraq and Zimbabwe, in 2016 Cara launched the Syria Programme, to provide support to academics affected by the Syria crisis. Most Syrian academics in exile, in Turkey, Lebanon or elsewhere, intend to return to Syria when they can, but for now they urgently need opportunities to work and to continue to grow professionally, through a very difficult time, so they will be able to help re-build a better system of higher education when they do go back. The Syria Programme owes a major debt to all those who are giving so freely of their time, expertise and energy to ensure its success. There are still opportunities for volunteers and institutional partners to add their support too to the various Cara Programme strands – put simply, the more support we have, the more Syrian academics we can help. If you would like to be involved, please contact syria@cara.ngo.

We are delighted to congratulate Sham University on its successful two-day Science Fair, showcasing dozens of theoretical and practical projects in various fields, including Mechatronics, Informatics, Agriculture, Chemistry, Political Science, and Economics. Over the course of the two days, the exhibition attracted a significant number of visitors, both official and public, including a notable attendance by female visitors, all eager to explore the students' outputs over the past academic year. The event served as an important opportunity to generate interaction and potential collaboration with key stakeholders, including industrialists and organizations operating in the region. This modest not-for-profit community university, with approximately 3,000 students spread across 6 faculties, was founded in 2016 in Azaz, in the non-regime NW of Syria, to help sustain access to higher education for the tens of millions of university age youths amongst the local community, and almost 3 million Syrians who have been internally displaced to the area by the ongoing conflict. Cara is piloting a Collaborative Developmental Partnership initiative with Sham faculty, supported by a core group of faculty from the universities of Kent, Leeds and Sussex, to help Sham evidence compliance with internationally recognised HE quality standards, and support student mobility in the absence of formal institutional accreditation. https://lnkd.in/ewi8wcav
