Protecting forests for communities, wildlife and climate

About us

Carbon Tanzania is a social enterprise that creates economic value in natural resources for indigenous people through sustainable management of forests and biodiversity. We generate forest-based carbon credits that enable Tanzania’s indigenous resource-owners to earn revenues from the protection of their natural resources. These verified emissions reductions allow businesses to invest in a nature-based solution that serves the climate, indigenous communities, wildlife, and contributes to delivering the SDGs. Our work with our forest community partners protects 6888km2 of forest avoiding 857,284 tonnes of CO2 annually while supporting rural livelihoods.

Equitable partnerships with local communities has always been at the core of our operations. However, 9 years ago, we could not have predicted that in 2024 the wider VCM would place such immense value on the involvement of local communities in project development and operation. It's a joy to revisit this archived interview with Pili, a Hadza woman involved in the Yaeda-Eyasi Landscape project from the very beginning. In the interview Pili shares how she came to learn about the forest protection carbon project and how the entire community is involved in safeguarding the forest. 🌳 Read the interview here. 👉 https://lnkd.in/dAKgg97m Nine years later, and now with a growing family, Pili is remains steadfast advocate for community-led conservation. Watch Pili in our latest video as she explains how every community member plays a vital role forest protection. 📽 Watch the video here https://lnkd.in/drqrSQUS #community-led #forests #carboncredits

Placing a value on a thriving forest that is greater than the value of felled trees means something different for everyone. For women in the Ntakata Mountains it means they don't have to walk for two hours to get their child to the clinic for their check up and childhood vaccinations. 🎙 "Our efforts towards protecting the Nakata Mountains forests have led to a big achievement - a fully functioning dispensary that benefits our community. Every day we’re making a difference!” - Amri Musa; Doctor, Mpembe Dispensary. 📽 Watch this short video to hear from Dr Amri Musa and the women benefiting from improved access to healthcare thanks to the carbon revenue generated when they protect their forests. #carbonfinance #healthcare #value

Last week community members from the Chingoli WMA in Ruvuma undertook training on how to collect survey data for the Community Monitoring Plan using mobile phones. The Community Monitoring Plan is a framework that assesses community understanding and perceptions towards the carbon project. We are using the framework to learn how the community feel about the project prior to full implementation, and what outcomes they anticipate from the project. 💡 We will continue to use this framework annually so that we can gain an understanding of whether community members feel that their expectations are being met, what they find positive about the project and, more importantly, their concerns. This is one of the tools we are using to ensure the voices of our community partners are heard. 📣 #carboncredits #community #socialimpact

The Ruvuma Wilderness project is taking steps to enhance forest protection activities through community awareness by recruiting and training 78 community members - 38 women and 40 men - as Carbon Champions. Carbon Champions are community members who travel throughout the community raising awareness of climate change, the need to protect forests, how the project operates and how the revenue will be shared and used. 🌳 All 39 villages are represented with two youths from each community. Their training focused on the role of their village in the implementation of the forest protection carbon project, governance, financial management and the voluntary carbon market. Additionally, 50 village game scouts across all five WMAs received training on biodiversity monitoring and data collection. 📲 #education #carboncredits #voluntarycarbonmarket

Carbon Tanzania works with Indigenous peoples and local communities in Tanzania to protect their community-owned forests. Our partnerships with communities are founded on the understanding that Indigenous peoples and local communities are often the most effective conservationists, with valuable traditional knowledge. We fairly reward forest communities for their success in protecting important biodiversity, ensuring that nature becomes a truly sustainable economic choice. When we PARTNER WITH NATURE we all thrive. We nominate Level to share their commitment to act with nature.

At Respira International, we know that we cannot reach net zero without nature-based solutions. As we wait for tech-based options to develop and scale, nature-based solutions are available now and can provide up to one-third of the climate solutions needed by 2030 to ensure a safe and stable climate. This is why we have built a portfolio of exceptional nature-based carbon projects that work with local communities to mitigate the climate crisis. Together we can WORK WITH NATURE. We nominate Carbon Tanzania to share their commitment to act with nature. #WithNature #NatureBasedSolutions
