LiDAR continues to blow my mind. This is an early preview of Revalue's drone-based LiDAR imagery in the beautiful Ruvuma landscape, Tanzania. The Ruvuma Wilderness Project is an exceptional, community-led carbon project from Carbon Tanzania, stretching across more than 1,000,000 hectares. Revalue has partnered with Carbon Tanzania to create radically better carbon credits. If your biomass measurements are inaccurate, then your credits are inaccurate. Revalue uses LiDAR to capture more accurate, more precise biomass structure data to underpin these radically better credits. Critically, Revalue integrates under-canopy LiDAR (linked below) with drone-based LiDAR (captured in the video) to maximise both accuracy and coverage. This eliminates dependence on traditional allometric approaches, which can suffer from limited sample data, significant measurement errors, and a lack of accuracy validation in the project area. We look at the latest carbon credit methodologies available from Verra, Isometric and others as the start line, not the finish line. 🏁 💨 The Revalue Algorithm: 1. Select the latest and greatest Methodology and best practices available today. 2. Review objectively and rigorously. Where are they strong and where are there limitations? 3. Keep the strengths. Add Model Features which go well-beyond the Methodology and common practices where there are limitations. 4. Continue to add and evolve Features until we have a new Model which provides the most cutting-edge and trusted carbon credits for the planet. 🌎 The Revalue Algorithm is why our Model designs already go beyond the latest methods from Verra, the ABACUS label, and other leading standards. I’m excited by the innovation in the biodiversity metrics and monitoring space. However, I think the language of biodiversity ‘credits’ may create the wrong mental model for the system. 🌳 🧠 Credits are considered fungible, meaning they are interchangeable. This makes sense for carbon credits because one ton of CO2 in the atmosphere is the same as another ton of CO2 in the atmosphere. Biodiversity is not fungible - we can’t equate tree frogs with elephants (and habitat proxies only go so far). A similar mental model mistake was potentially made at the start of the carbon markets, where carbon credits were considered a ‘commodity’, like oil. However, carbon credits are potentially closer to bonds. While they are equivalent instruments, I wouldn’t swap my 10-year US treasury with another anonymous 10-year bond. Just as not all bonds are equal, not all carbon credits are equal - they are not a commodity. This is why having effective Ratings Agencies is so important. To be clear, I firmly believe payments for biodiversity and ecosystem services is important and desperately needed. We are going through the sixth mass extinction event (the Holocene extinction), with the last being 65m years ago, wiping out the dinosaurs. I’d just gently push us to move away from the term biodiversity ‘credits’ and find more effective language to create clearer thinking as we tackle this together.
