"The implementation of digital ID in any rushed way therefore runs a risk of deepening existing inequalities and distrust, which could harm the government’s agenda to restore trust between communities and build societal cohesion. If the government is to make digital inclusion a priority, digital technologies must not compromise on civil liberties and freedoms – and must take on board the possible warnings in our research." Rachel Coldicutt reflects on the new the Data (Use and Access) Bill in today's LabourList. Read more: https://lnkd.in/ezSNXXQE

How do you feel about digital ID? Our latest research shows there are significant divides between generations and communities about the potential impacts of digital ID. ❌ 60% of Black and 66% of Asian respondents expressed concern that digital ID could lead to social exclusion. 🕊️ 53% of people from both groups express concern over the impact that digital technologies have on people's freedoms. 🚨 60% of 18-24 year olds and 61% 25-34 year olds expressed concern about discrimination caused by lack of access to suitable ID. 🚔 Policing is one of the most contested issues, particularly the issue of whether or not the police should have the ability to request ID. I am currently sick in bed, trying to speed recover from a lingering cold, because I'm doing not one but *three* talks this week, on data, emerging technologies, and public good. On Tuesday, for NPC (New Philanthropy Capital) on why funders should worry about AI and new technologies (tl;dr: power and justice!) On Thursday, at the Charity Digital Artificial Intelligence Summit, I'll be talking charity leaders through some of the climate, rights and justice issues that mean using AI might be at odds with their organisations' values and the needs of their beneficiaries On Friday I'll be at the Royal Statistical Society talking about data for public good, in particular sharing some insight from Careful Trouble (Careful Industries and Promising Trouble)'s Digital ID work, looking at the importance of designing for mini publics. And I have some free slots for paid talks in November and December, so do get in touch if you'd like to make some #carefultrouble

How do we reach young people? Especially when providing an important service such as mental health support or financial advice. Youth organisations across the UK are facing this question. Our research has uncovered that there isn’t one way to reach out. Because, unlike other generations, Google is unlikely to be their starting point. 40% of young people between 18-24 years old are using TikTok, Instagram or other social platforms to search for information, rather than Google Search or Google Maps. Our report ‘Meeting young people where they are” Towards a new model of essential digital support’ emphasises the need for a greater understanding of young people’s support needs and journeys. By working with young people, we can build this into the design of support and infrastructure. Announcing a new research project, in collaboration with University of Bristol🎉 Together with Prof Albert Sanchez-Graells, we will develop a tool to support responsible AI procurement by local authorities. The ‘plug and play’ tool will bring into a single place different strands of guidance and be tailored to supporting decisions on whether and how to procure AI in the local authority context. This project is coming at a vital time for the new government. We can realise the benefits of automation while minimising problems for communities and public bodies! Find out more about the project here: https://lnkd.in/eXbJE3JD
