We're delighted that First Light Pavilion has been awarded the SEGD Global Design 'Best of Show' Award! Many congratulations to the team! ⭐

This year’s awards celebrated 29 winning projects selected from a competitive pool of 292 entries representing 17 countries. The honored projects span a variety of topics, disciplines, and verticals, illustrating how experiential design can be used to bridge connections between people and the spaces they inhabit. Head to https://lnkd.in/db6ZeVgR to read more about all of our 2024 winners! The Best of Show Award was presented to First Light Pavilion, designed by Casson Mann Ltd for the University of Manchester in Macclesfield, United Kingdom (Image 1). Casson Mann’s design ingeniously repurposes sections of the 1957 Lovell Telescope, transforming them into both interpretive surfaces and sculptural elements that define the exhibition space. The Sylvia Harris Award, which recognizes a project exemplifying design for the public good, was awarded to Te Mātāwai (Image 2), designed by Maynard Design Consultancy for Kāinga Ora in Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland), Aotearoa (New Zealand). Last month I had the pleasure of volunteering for Newman Holiday Trust as a one-to-one carer on the Midlands holiday. This charity runs 7 annual holidays around the UK for children with varying special educational needs. Newman Trust provides them with new, exciting experiences and offers much needed respite for families and carers. The charity is run entirely by volunteers and funded entirely by donations. To support NHT by volunteering, donating or fundraising, please go to: https://lnkd.in/eykPhaDV A massive thank you to Casson Mann Ltd for the charity leave time, which supported my week with the Trust.

Enabled by the The National Archives, UK Records at Risk fund, the University of Leicester have acquired Casson Mann Ltd’s archive - over 20 years worth of ideas, drawings and plans relating to our many previous projects. The university’s Archives and Special Collections department are conducting the review, appraisal and repackaging of these records, making them accessible to future researchers, students and the general public. Roger Mann, Director and Co-Founder of Casson Mann says, ‘We are delighted to have found a permanent home for our design archive, and grateful to the National Archives and Leicester’s School of Museum Studies for creating this opportunity. We have worked on so many projects over the years – each one wonderful and challenging in its own way. It is rewarding to know that all the preparation, the thinking and ideas will be preserved and may be of use to future researchers.’ Pictured is a sketch by Co-Founder Dinah Casson from The Garden project at the Science Museum Group, which opened in 1995.

We're delighted that the universal accessibility model at Musée national de la Marine has been recognised by the 'Best Practice' Award from the ICOM CECA International Committee for Education and Cultural Action! Many congratulations to the team!

Musée national de la Marine has been named winner of the ICOM CECA International Committee for Education and Cultural Action Best Practice award for Universal Accessibility! Many congratulations! Accessibility was a key part of the brief and Casson Mann Ltd worked with the Museum to pioneer a new accessibility model that employs sensory augmentations and flexible displays to support accessibility across all age groups and abilities. The design offers multiple ways for visitors to access the stories regardless of their physical, visual, hearing, or intellectual abilities. There are eight mediation tables across the various galleries, incorporating objects to touch, screens with audio descriptions and translation into FSL (French Sign Language), texts in braille and FALC (Easy to Read and Understand) texts. Displays are flexible to facilitate ‘toned-down’ time slots, during which sound and lighting are reduced for visitors’ comfort. Use of audio beacons, tactile orientation and guidance, and sensory augmentations helps to create a thoughtful and comfortable museum experience that is accessible for all.
