Retail crime like this costs retailers and communities billions of pounds every year, this increases the prices of the goods we buy adding to the cost of living crisis. Theft from retailers can also cause retailers to close their doors causing job losses and the loss of essential services in our communities. There are many different types of retail thieves and reasons why they do it such as lone prolific shoplifters to organised groups and gangs who steal to order. Other reasons why people steal is because of food hunger, drug and alcohol addiction, mental health and the compulsion to steal. We have a mixture of home grown retail thieves and gangs that travel back and forth from Europe. We also have people who have entered the country illegally and either commit crime in order to survive and stay under the radar, you may find that some of these individuals are being exploited or are working for wages under the minimum wage. Many people who commit retail crime are also quite often involved in other types of crimes such as street robbery, dwelling and commercial burglar, car crime and even steal from people gardens and gardens sheds. Retail crime is far from victimless and it will take a joint effort to reduce it and tackle all the issues that are contributing to it. If something is left to rot it will only get worse. If you are a member of the public who is experiencing financial hardship or have a drug or alcohol addiction there is help and support available in your area. A serial shoplifter in Lambeth, South East London, has been caught red-handed stealing steaks, as Metropolitan Police continue their crackdown on retail crime. After multiple reports of theft from a Co-Op store, Inspector Darren Watson and his team from the Met set up a covert operation—a ‘steak-out’—to catch the offender in the act. The suspect was swiftly apprehended, adding to the growing number of criminals being brought to justice in the borough. Crackdown on Retail Crime Working closely with local businesses, officers from the Met have successfully jailed 11 of Lambeth’s 14 most prolific shoplifters in the past month alone. Their efforts are part of a wider initiative to tackle retail crime, which has been placing a significant financial burden on local stores and increasing concerns among business owners and residents. #retail #security #metropolitanpolice #metpolice #police #news #london #lambeth #atlast Read the full story here: https://lnkd.in/ep_Kf35i
