🚨 NEW: Instagram failed to act on 93% of the abusive comments targeting high-profile US women candidates we reported. Meta must step up to protect women and public officials ahead of the US election. CCDH reported 1,000 abusive comments targeting 5 Republican and 5 Democrat women candidates running for office in 2024. A week later, Instagram had taken no action against 926 of these hateful comments, including sexist and racist abuse, death and r*pe threats. We also found that: 🛑 Vice President Kamala Harris is one of the targets of the abusive comments we reported to Instagram. A week later, the platform had failed to act on 92% of these comments. 🛑 77% of the 1,000 abusive comments we reported contained gendered terms, such as “b*tch", “r*pe” and “wh*re”. 🛑 From the 560K comments we collected from women candidates’ posts, 1 in 25 is considered “highly likely” to be toxic by Google’s Perspective API. By allowing abusive and violent attacks targeting women candidates, Instagram is failing to enforce its Community Guidelines. The platform must enforce its guidelines and protect public officials. Lawmakers must hold Instagram accountable. 📢 Violence and abuse have no place in our politics. Our new research in CNBC ⤵️ https://lnkd.in/eK_8HEPv #Instagram #Meta #WomenInPolitics
