JOINING THE INDUSTRY CALL FOR IMPROVED DISPATCH OF BATTERIES Congestion in the grid impacts energy consumers, asset owners, grid performance, and the renewable transition – and it’s one of the main challenges in the UK energy sector right now. With large volumes of wind being generated in the North, and the majority of consumption taking place in the South, the available capacity is simply insufficient to flow the power to where it is needed. This imbalance in production and consumption geographies, paired with lack of capacity, forces grid operators to shut down wind turbines in the North whilst starting gas-powered plants in the South to keep up with demand. The issue has led industry to deliver an open letter that calls for actions to improve dispatching systems, utilise batteries more efficiently, and maximise the potential of investments already made in Scottish batteries. We share the concerns highlighted in the letter, and firmly support the industry call for improved dispatching of batteries. Centrica is working actively along a number of paths aimed at reducing congestion in the grid through making investments in energy technologies and infrastructure, and at Centrica Energy we’re particularly focused on how batteries address congestion issues and reduce the costs of congestion management, leveraging batteries as a better, cheaper, and faster alternative to shutting down wind turbines or building new cables. We work closely with our clients and the National Energy System Operator (NESO) to actively use batteries as a means to store excess renewable energy from the North, and move it to the South when the grid has sufficient capacity. More recently, we’ve seen positive results from our congestion management strategy as the UK has seen strong wind production. For multiple days, the battery was instructed to charge when the grid was congested, which avoided wind turbines being shut down, and then moved the discharging away from congestion periods – a strategy that resulted in a top position on the Modo Leaderboard. However, even with these positive indicators, issues with skip rates persist and need to be addressed. The priority must be to maximise the potential of batteries to alleviate congestion and deliver cost reductions for consumers. We are committed to grid reliability and to utilising our market expertise in close collaboration with the NESO and our clients to support the renewable transition. The Scottish batteries are needed, so let’s make sure we use them! DOUBLE UP ON STUDENT COMPANY VISITS We’re all about contributing to fostering the next generation of energy talent. Recently we hosted two company visits for over 60 students across our offices in Aalborg and in Copenhagen.  We had the pleasure of welcoming 40 students from Aalborg University, the Commodity Economics course, and 20 students from the LINC-STEM association from Lund University. During the visits we gave the students a glimpse of what it's like to work within energy trading and what a career journey can look like at Centrica Energy. Through a series of presentations and office tours, we introduced the students to various parts of our business, including gas trading, trade operations, origination, business management, quant trading, trading analytics, data analytics, and intraday trading. Additionally, our current graduates shared insights on their rotations at Centrica Energy, their current projects and where they aspire to go for their next rotation. And no visits, without a prize! In Aalborg we wrapped up the visit by announcing the winner of the trading simulation game, which we held for the same groups of AAU students a week ago. Well done and congratulations to Patrick, who made the best risk-adjusted returns with a Sharpe Ratio of 0,965 with his 5M Euros in monopoly money. Thanks to all the students, AAU, and LINC-STEM! #CentricaEnergy #EnergyMoversByNature

INSPIRATION, ACTIVITIES, AND A HEALTHY DOSE OF COMPETITION: LET’S REVISIT THE CENTRICA ENERGY GAMES 2024 The Centrica Energy Europe Games have been a tradition in our company for more than a decade. These days, we are reminiscing about the sunny day in September when our European Energy Movers made their way the Rold Forest in the northern part of Denmark to take part in the 2024 version of The Games. For some of our people, this was their first Games. Others have been to the event several times, while a few still remember the very first edition.   Since its beginning more than a decade ago, The Games have become a strong tradition in our company. Common to every version is a day filled with inspiring presentations, fun times with colleagues, and exciting activities: from high ropes to horseback riding, football and salsa, team battles, and volunteering – The Games have something for everyone. Aside from all the fun and games, every year we present our people with strategy updates and inspiring talks from external speakers. This year, we had the pleasure of welcoming Gerard Reid, founder of Alexa Capital and co-host of the podcast ‘Redefining Energy’, who shared his views on global energy trends. We were also joined by Ulrich Bang, VP in the Danish Chamber of Commerce, who talked us through the Danish energy sector. Thank you both for joining us and for sharing your insights! Thanks to all our Energy Movers for a great event. Now, you can have a look at the video and get a taste of the Centrica Energy spirit! #CentricaEnergy #EnergyMoversByNature #EnergisingAGreenerFairerFuture

(ALMOST) LIVE FROM NET ZERO EUROPE These days, the Net Zero Europe conference is being held, and three of our Energy Movers have made their way to Brussels to take part in important discussions on renewable energy and Battery Energy Storage Systems. Yesterday, our VP Head of Renewable Energy Trading & Optimisation, Kristian Gjerløv-Juel, participated in the panel ‘Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), Solar PPAs, and EU Electricity Market Design’. In between exciting dialogues and interesting panels, Kristian shared the key highlights from his panel, where the debate circulated around the very important topics of: → System challenges like grid connection processing, permitting, and other delaying factors that pose a challenge to PPA transactions. → How lack of flexibility, grid utilisation, and buildout lead to more negative prices and cannibalisation risk. → How cannibalisation risk can be mitigated using renewables as a source of flexibility in ancillary service markets to create revenue diversification, having different locations and technologies in the portfolio, and by innovating how offtakers buy under PPAs. → How the Electricity Market Reform, even if it aims at promoting PPAs, can drain liquidity if we are not careful with CfDs, bidding zone reconfigurations, and other key elements of the reform. We were pleased to see from the active panel and the audience that there is a consensus in the market around these topics, and that there is a clear willingness in the market to bring renewables and storage to the market and for corporates to buy from it on market terms. Today, our colleague from Centrica Power, Jeroen Verbeeck, Head of European Asset Development, will take part in the panel ‘Enhancing the Management of Renewable Energy Assets’ – it starts at 13:00 CET, so you can still make it if you are very fast! #CentricaEnergy #EnergyMoversByNature #EnergisingAGreenerFairerFuture

ENERGY MOVERS AT ENERGY TRADING WEEK 2024 Last week, five of our Energy Movers attended Energy Trading Week 2024, engaging in debates on various energy topics, including regulations, procurement, portfolio management, algo trading, data, and innovation. Here are their key highlights from the event 👇 Kiara (Mariachiara) Zennaro discussed how decarbonised gases such as biomethane, green and low-carbon hydrogen, and derivatives have a key role to play in decarbonising the economy and how a more harmonised framework is needed to support the development of a liquid market for these gases. From Maria Popova’s panel on the latest developments in compliance markets, she highlighted how linking the UK ETS with the EU ETS should be a priority in future discussions between the EU and the new UK Government to improve liquidity, support efficient risk management and competitiveness, reduce volatility, and support efficient trade and the cost-effective achievement of climate goals. Moving from the regulatory space to procurement and portfolio management, Riccardo Rossi participated in two panels covering how we at Centrica Energy help corporates cover their energy needs and how to manage a complex portfolio of energy assets. Here, the discussion evolved around the complexity of measuring different risks, but also the positive effect on diversification of risk that this allows. Our fourth Energy Mover on the stage was Ravindra Dhaka, who chaired the digitisation track, moderated one panel and took part in two. The three panels all centred around innovation, digital solutions and their impact on energy trading. The panels discussed how to deal with the increasing presence of algo trading, how to optimise data management, how to go beyond the AI buzzwords and make the most of the possibilities that the technology offers, and finally how technology is playing a vital role in a real time data- and software driven trading environment. Our fifth and final Energy Mover to participate was Souvik Ghosh, who shared his insights in two panels. Here, he and his fellow panellists covered how change management plays a crucial role in the trading back office and IT functions and key market trends impacting businesses and the trading ecosystem. The event was highly engaging, leaving our team both enlightened and energised! #CentricaEnergy #EnergyMoversByNature
