About us
About The IRDR Centre for Gender and Disaster is a world leading trans-disciplinary research centre, based in the Institute for Risk and Disaster Reduction at UCL. The Centre aims to develop awareness of, and responsiveness to, gender in the context of hazard, risk, disaster and conflict. Its approach is feminist and decolonial and it aims to employ these in bridging the gaps between ‘hard’ and ‘soft’ sciences; and between dominant and subaltern voices. This page focuses on the activities of the Centre and also the Centre's flagship project GRRIPP (Gender Responsive Resilience and Intersectionality in Policy and Practice). ❗NEW RESOURCE ❗ For those studying exploitation at work: Framework of exploitation developed by Sabah Boufkhed et. al. (2022) New insights from the Who cares? project, exploring care workers’ experiences of exploitation during & post COVID. Collab w/ HCRInstitute, The University of Manchester Summary: ➡️ Used to guide the 21 international focus groups conducted by the Who cares? project team, the framework conceptualises labour exploitation as a continuum ranging from breaches of decent work standards on one end to forced labour on the other. ➡️There are 5 key dimensions where worker exploitation can occur, ranging from minor breaches of social and legal protection up to threats to their personal security. ➡️These dimensions impact in various ways how workers perceive their general health, which is used as a final point of analysis. This framework offers a new way to gather insights on the relationship between occupational exploitation and worker’s health.
