Cyclone Alfred exposed some major weaknesses in Australia's vital infrastructure. ⛈️ The cyclone left a trail of destruction—power outages, flooded roads, and storm-damaged homes. 🌱To better prepare for future extreme weather, we can learn from nature, research from Griffith University shows. Nature has been managing extreme weather for millennia. By mimicking its designs, we can strengthen infrastructure against floods, erosion, and storms. Some examples: 🏞️ Flood protection: Wetlands and parks can act as holding ponds; lines of trees or mangroves can slow the progress of floodwaters. 🌊 Coastal resilience: Restoring sand dunes and mangroves can shield coastal settlements from storm surges. 🌳 Urban adaptation: Green spaces and bioswales absorb excess rain, preventing floods. Innovative solutions already exist – we must work with nature so that nature can protect us! 🌏 Find out how ➡️ https://ow.ly/lBH750VhXQI #NatureBasedSolutions

At the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), we're dedicated to helping countries and communities lower risk and raise resilience in the face of natural and human-induced hazards. Our work is guided by the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, a 15-year agreement adopted by the international community in 2015, which was the first building block of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

🚀 We've Just Launched the Comprehensive School Safety Framework FAQ! We are excited to share that we’ve just launch a new FAQ to help education practitioners, policymakers, and advocates better understand and navigate school safety. With over 80 countries endorsing the Comprehensive School Safety Framework (CSSF), this FAQ is designed to cut through the complexity and provide clear, practical answers on: ✅ What Comprehensive School Safety (CSS) actually means ✅ How to endorse and implement the CSSF effectively ✅ The current state of school safety globally—what’s working and where we still need to improve ✅ How the CSSF connects with other school safety frameworks ✅ The role of GADRRRES in supporting countries and partners One of the highlights of this FAQ is the connection between the CSSF, the INEE Minimum Standards, and the Safe Schools Declaration (SSD). These frameworks work together seamlessly to offer a comprehensive approach to school safety and resilience. 🔑 The CSSF provides a holistic, all-hazards framework that covers everything from natural and climate changed induced hazards to conflict. 🔧 The INEE Minimum Standards give practical guidance on implementing key actions like educational continuity and curriculum adaptation. ⚖️ The SSD strengthens both by committing to protect schools from attacks, reduce military use of educational facilities, and ensure that education continues during crises. Together, these frameworks create a powerful system that helps countries keep schools safe and resilient, protecting children’s rights and ensuring education in emergencies. Take a look at the FAQ and join us in making schools safer for all: https://lnkd.in/dAShF_nr Check the countries that endorsed the CSSF :https://lnkd.in/eC529Tge #SchoolSafety #EducationResilience #CSSF #SafeSchools #EducationInEmergencies #SSD Inter-agency Network for Education in Emergencies (INEE), Global Coalition to Protect Education from Attack

Meet the hurricane hunters.🌪️🛩️ A seasoned crew of 17 engineers, scientists, and pilots flying a 1970s-era turboprop wrapped in bulky scientific equipment fly into the eye of a raging Category 3 storm. ⛈️ In the fuselage is a large canister containing an AI-powered drone to be deployed into the eye of the hurricane. Their mission? To learn what exactly happens inside a cyclone – because through better understanding we can better reduce risks.💡 Read the gripping story of the hurricane hunters here ➡️ https://ow.ly/Xa6k50Vhu0s

The people of Kiribati face enormous challenges, but their determination and resolve are inspiring, says UNDRR's Kamal Kishore.
During my visit to the beautiful island State of Kiribati – a country facing so many challenges – I have been repeatedly struck by the resolve and determination of its people and government. Their efforts, like this project to restore mangrove plantations as a nature-based solution to provide protection against coastal hazards, are truly inspiring. It gives me optimism that with such an attitude we can do so much to reduce disasters risks, both here in the Pacific region and around the world.

Hurricanes are growing more dangerous. Find out why, and how we can reduce the risks!
Climate change is making hurricanes more powerful & dangerous. Storm surges are higher due to sea level rise caused by climate change. Higher temperatures also mean heavier rain & flooding during storms. We must #ActNow and take #ClimateAction.
