  • Supermarkets love to talk about being climate-friendly, but are they actually tackling their biggest climate problem? 🛒 93% of supermarket emissions come from the production, consumption and disposal of the food they sell. And about half of these emissions come from meat and dairy products alone. Yet our new research with Mighty Earth shows that none of the 20 biggest food retailers in Europe and the US is publicly tracking or cutting methane emissions: a powerful greenhouse gas driving global heating.     The 20 largest food retailers globally are 'failing' at addressing methane emissions from meat and dairy, a new report by Changing Markets Foundation and Mighty Earth has found. None of the retailers had methane-specific targets, but US retailers including Kroger, Albertsons and Walmart were found to lag behind European chains such as Tesco, ALDI SÜD HOLDING and Carrefour - find out why in the article below:

     🚨Dismantling environmental rules won’t help farmers 🚨 The European Commission is once again trying to “simplify” Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), just a year after reforms that already weakened key environmental protections. Meanwhile, farmers are struggling with rising temperatures, poor soil health, and collapsing biodiversity – problems the current CAP has failed to fix. Instead of supporting sustainable farming, it continues to fund harmful practices and direct payments that mostly benefit the largest landowners. If the EU is serious about supporting farmers, it must strengthen environmental and climate policies in the CAP – not weaken them. 📃That's why we've joined 60 organisations calling on them to: - Strengthen environmental rules, not weaken them - Increase funding for eco-schemes - Support peatland restoration and sustainable soil management - Link payments to real environmental benefits - Give farmers better support to transition to nature-friendly practices 🌱The CAP should work for people, farmers, and nature.     Supermarkets are still ignoring one of the biggest climate threats: methane emissions from meat and dairy. A new analysis from Changing Markets Foundation and Mighty Earth shows that none of the top 20 global food retailers—like Tesco, Walmart, and Carrefour—are reporting their methane emissions or setting reduction targets. Methane is responsible for about 25% of global warming so far, and a third of supermarket methane comes from their supply chains. Yet, these retailers are failing to act. This is a huge missed opportunity to fight climate change. Retailers must cut methane emissions by 30% by 2030, as part of the Global Methane Pledge. They also need to be transparent and report emissions annually. Consumers are watching closely. If retailers don’t take action, they risk losing trust.     Our ground-breaking new investigation tackles a source of methane pollution almost entirely ignored: the food industry – source of more emissions than fossil fuels (with the bulk of the impact coming from meat and dairy).  But most of the supermarkets that sell all that meat and milk aren’t even paying attention to the gases cows and other livestock are pouring into the atmosphere. This report changes that. “Clean up on Aisle 3: The methane mess supermarkets are hiding” puts the gases from the meat and dairy aisle into the public eye for the first time. Huge thanks to our co-authors from Changing Markets Foundation. One big challenge: the retailers aren’t even measuring their methane emissions. To say the least, it’s pretty hard to solve a problem without understanding it. We have previously assessed meat and dairy emissions company-by-company. If we can do it, retailers themselves certainly can. We have reached out to all of them to offer our methodologies and assistance. It's not all bleak – there is progress from individual companies that, in some ways, is even more important than measurement: the report finds that several major retailers have set targets for 60% plant-based protein sales, offered plant-based protein at the same price as meat, and improved their marketing of sustainable protein. Shifting to plant-based and other alternative proteins is the single most important step the food industry can take over the long-term to reduce its footprint on Nature and climate. Tesco tops our scorecard but still only achieved 51%, with Schwarz Gruppe, Carrefour, Sainsbury's, and Asda taking notable action on plant-based protein. Most retailers, however, scored below 25%, highlighting a major gap between their climate promises and real action. US retailers (including the American outposts of European brands) lag substantially behind, with minimal transparency and insufficient action. They will be a growing focus of our campaign. With agriculture being responsible for around 54% of all human-made methane emissions in the EU, the food and farming sector has a major role to play🌡️ But supermarkets are failing to do their part 🛒 Changing Markets Foundation and Mighty Earth have released a new Methane Action Tracker, revealing a troubling lack of climate action from major supermarkets🔍 🚨 The 20 biggest food retailers in Europe and the US aren’t tracking methane, setting targets, or taking any real action.     🌎🛒 NO SUPERMARKET HAS A METHANE PLAN, BUT US RETAILERS ARE THE WORST CLIMATE OFFENDERS According to a new report focused on methane emissions, the world’s biggest supermarkets are failing us on climate action, with the situation particularly bad in the US. None of the top 20 retailers – from Lidl in Germany, REWE Group and Tesco in Europe to Walmart, Kroger and Costco Wholesale in the US – report how much methane they produce, or have targets to reduce their emissions of the harmful gas. Methane is 86 times more potent than CO2 over a 20-year period, and is the primary contributor to the formation of ground-level ozone, a greenhouse gas linked to a million premature deaths every year. Agriculture is the main source of human-caused methane emissions, with livestock farming responsible for the majority of this share. Meat and dairy also make up a third of retailers’ emissions, though in an assessment of their methane contributions across 18 indicators, the Changing Markets Foundation and Mighty Earth found that only one of these supermarkets – Tesco – scored higher than half of the points available (51 out of 100). In fact, the average score was just 20. “Methane emissions are a major blindspot of supermarkets. Our scorecard reveals a complete lack of action, with the most powerful players in the food supply chains completely ignoring their government’s commitments to cut methane emissions by 30% by 2030. This must change urgently,” said Madeleine Haughton-Boakes, senior campaigner at the Changing Markets Foundation.
