Our vision to build a new cancer care centre have been given a major boost with a £2million donation! Almost £8.5m has been raised for the appeal including an incredible £2million from the Summerfield Charitable Trust, as well as a host of individual donations, fundraising challenges and business support. To date, the Gloucestershire-based Trust has given more than £7 million in grants to good causes across the county, supporting areas such as the arts, environment, education, regeneration and sport. “The Summerfield Charitable Trust is deeply committed to supporting this vital cause that will not only enhance the quality of care for patients but also significantly improve the resources available to their families and the healthcare professionals who support them. This state-of-the-art facility will provide a haven for those affected by cancer, offering cutting-edge treatment, comprehensive support services, and a compassionate environment where healing and hope can thrive.” David Owen, Chairman of Trustees. We are profoundly grateful to the Summerfield Charitable Trust for their incredible gift that will transform cancer care and offer hope to countless lives for generations to come. 🦁 We’re roaring to go! Lions at Large is Bournside’s charity of the year 🦁 We are thrilled at the first-week response to our announcement that the Cheltenham and Gloucester Hospitals Charity 'Lions at Large' appeal is Cheltenham Bournside School & Sixth Form's Charity of the Year. We've already raised over £400 in voluntary contributions from the Bournside community. Students and staff at Bournside are proud to be supporting this worthwhile fundraising campaign this year; working together to fundraise towards an amazing project - The Big Space Cancer Appeal. “Three of our school core values are ambition, respect and support which align perfectly with the ambitious purpose of the Big Space Cancer Appeal. Our incredible students are already busy coming up with some brilliant fundraising ideas for the year ahead, including a 'Lion Aid' music concert, badges and fun runs. We are delighted to get our school community behind this important cause. Watch this space.” - Mr Waters, Deputy Headteacher (Culture) A huge thank you to Arlene McGlynn from the Cheltenham and Gloucester Hospitals Charity who joined us with Leon the Lion, painted by the incredible internationally renowned artist, PJ Crook MBE at our recent open evening, which helped to launch our partnership to 1000+ visitors. We then went on to present our Charity of the Year to all students during assemblies. The Big Space Cancer Appeal is raising funds for a new cancer centre in Cheltenham that will offer local patients the very best environment for treatment, healing and recovery, creating space to care, talk, think, recover, rest and innovate. Thank you in advance for supporting this year's charity with us. Together we can achieve more. If you'd like to donate, please visit: https://lnkd.in/ecqhEZNK 📸 : Gemma Gaskins Photography

Thank you so much to Andrew Merrell for such a kind, thoughtful and insightful piece for the The Raikes Journal. Your words beautifully captured the heart of The Big Space Appeal and its mission - thank you for bringing this important cause to life!
Andrew Merrell is a journalist and editor of the digital magazine and community interest company, The Raikes Journal CIC.
Every now and again a challenge is taken up that reflects back on a whole people and place and speaks volumes about who they are and what sort of world they want to live in. The story that leads the latest edition of The Raikes Journal below is about one such challenge - and that place is Gloucestershire. In this case the mountain to climb is so big you would think no one would ever take it on, but the team in charge is already nearing half way to the summit. If it can plant its flag on top it will benefit every one of us. We will all, at some point, have our lives touched by cancer. For the woman leading the campaign, whose CV is already bedecked with significant achievements, you sense she feels that this would surpass all else. But for her, like all those involved, this is not about herself - it is about the community in which she lives. It's a story others have told, but not like this - not by attending the event, not by talking to the people, not by finding the heart of it. That's what Raikes was set up to do. If you want to help keep journalism alive and well in Gloucestershire please do sign up to support us. Oh, there are some briefing notes on the edition too, featuring good news for Hartpury University and Hartpury College, the University of Gloucestershire and Alex Madigan of Solux (who has won an award from The Music Works (Gloucestershire)), plus a call from Barnwood Trust for more trustees.
