In 2023 the Chemical Business Association reached its 100th anniversary. Such a momentous milestone represents a century of the Association’s unceasing support for our members and the wider chemical supply chain. While cause for celebration, the CBA continues to evolve to meet current needs and address ongoing challenges. #CBA #StrongerTogether #VoiceoftheChemicalSupplyChain #100years #Anniversary
Chemical Business Association
Chemical Manufacturing
The voice of the UK Chemical Supply Chain
About us
The Chemical Business Association (CBA), founded in 1923, has a long and illustrious heritage in delivering for its members and is the leading organisation representing the complete chemical supply chain. Many of our members are SME’s and include manufacturers, distributors, traders, warehouse operators, logistics and transport companies, as well as service providers and suppliers who collectively are the main chemical industry interface providing products and services to virtually every sector. Such a diverse membership gives the distinct advantage of a 360-degree view and insight of the global chemical supply chain which, combined with the extensive and in-depth expertise of our staff, enables the CBA to provide wide-ranging services and support to our members, and to engage and work closely with Government and other key stakeholders in the UK and overseas. The chemicals and pharmaceutical industry is the UK’s second biggest industry and CBA members employ over 10,000 people and contribute more than £3 billion to the UK economy. Chemicals are vital for society and with more than 95% of all manufactured products containing inputs from the chemicals industry, CBA members handle around 6.75 million tonnes and make over 2.5 million deliveries of chemicals each year. Health and safety, people and sustainability are at the heart of what we do, and we lead and participate in many initiatives such as the ‘Responsible Care Programme’ which we have been part of since 1993. The Chemical Business Association is the voice of the UK chemical supply chain.

Edward and myself were in London for the first COMAH Safety Forum, Climate Change Adaptation group meeting hosted at the Fuels Industry UK offices, joined by representatives from regulators and industry to make sure we are doing this right. Key takeaways from today; Climate change has made extreme weather events increasingly unpredictable. The need for adaptation to make sure we are safeguarding operations and protecting the natural environment from the knock on effects is more important than ever!

A bit closer to home today to take part and and present at a Department for Business and Trade Chemicals Network meeting along with other Departments and key stakeholders at the very impressive Graphene Engineering Innovation Centre in Manchester. Key focus points for me today to highlight were the ongoing impacts of Brexit, not least UK REACH and multiple other barriers to trade, along with the continued and ongoing significant disruptions to the chemical supply chain and volatile costs of transportation, especially global container rates. Equally, it was also to talk about the many initiatives and solutions that we're part of or leading on at the Chemical Business Association, for example, our People & Skills Hub (P&SH), Generation Logistics and Generation STEAM. The 10th October is #WorldMentalHealthDay. This years theme is workplace mental health. We spend a large part of our time working, and it can have both positive and negative effects on our mental health. With an estimated 15% of the UK workforce having an existing mental health condition, having open conversations around workplace mental health can help create a positive work environment and reduce stigma around mental health problems. Whether it's in the chemical supply chain industry or beyond, it's important that a the workplace can be a safe space for people, regardless of what they are going through.
