On July 19, a global IT system outage disrupted operations at Tesla’s Texas and Nevada production lines, as reported by Business Insider. Internal communications revealed that Tesla's Windows servers, laptops, and manufacturing equipment were down, causing significant operational challenges. The impact extended beyond Tesla. Magna International, a major auto parts supplier, faced disruptions and is actively collaborating with customers and suppliers to mitigate the fallout. Toyota reported minor issues at some dealerships but remained largely unaffected due to pre-scheduled shutdowns. Nissan noted some disruptions among suppliers and dealers, though their own systems stayed operational. Ford is currently evaluating the situation. Waymo is leading the charge towards widespread commercialisation of autonomous vehicles. While many face safety and funding hurdles, Waymo is accelerating its expansion and innovation. They seem to be on an unprecedented growth trajectory, bringing robotaxis to the Bay Area, metro Los Angeles, and Austin, Texas, by the end of this year. This makes Waymo the only company in the sector rapidly increasing U.S. ridership and revenue. Currently, they are carrying tens of thousands of passengers per week in hundreds of autonomous vehicles. This month, Waymo achieved a significant milestone by opening robotaxi services to the general public in San Francisco, making its autonomous vehicles a common sight on the city streets. Enhancing Vehicle Mapping and Safety with Swarm Data. Swarm data is gathered by vehicle sensors, uploaded to the cloud, and used to build detailed live maps. These maps provide drivers with more time to react to potential dangers ahead. This vehicle intelligence begins with swarm data collection, crowdsourcing data from as many vehicles on the road as possible. The data extracts insights, which go to the cloud to enhance vehicles’ intelligence. These insights boost the performance of various systems, such as ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) and navigation. In Renningen, Germany, connected map services are helping automakers enrich in-car mapping using sensors and swarm data. This data is transferred into the clouds of software-defined vehicles (SDVs) to provide real-time driving information, increasing safety and drivability. Volkswagen is among the automakers using swarm data for ADAS systems. BYD has signed a $1 billion deal with Turkey to build a new factory, set to produce 150,000 electric and hybrid vehicles annually. The plant, expected to start production by the end of 2026, will create up to 5,000 jobs and include a state-of-the-art research and development center. This strategic move strengthens BYD's foothold in Europe, especially significant in light of the recent EU tariff increase on Chinese EVs, which now includes an additional 17.4% charge. The new factory will also cater to Turkey's growing domestic market, where EVs accounted for 7.5% of car sales last year in a country with a population of almost 90 million.
