If at first you don't succeed.....

I help find Superstar Sales Managers and Business Development Managers who will grow your business dramatically

You Can't Learn to Ski Without Falling Yesterday, I took my daughter to her first ever skiing lesson. Like many people she fell over several times as you can see, but one of the first things you learn on the slopes is that falling isn’t just expected—it’s essential. Each tumble is a lesson, (so she learnt lots), each misstep a chance to improve. And while skiing may not be everyone's chosen battleground, the principle applies universally: if you don’t succeed at first, keep pushing forward. In sales and business, just like on the mountain, progress comes from persistence. It’s easy to feel defeated after a rough pitch, an unexpected rejection, or a missed target. But every “fall” we take can teach us how to find our footing again. It sharpens our instincts and builds resilience that no book or training could ever instill. The discomfort of failure is often where the best growth lies. So, embrace the falls. Learn from them, adjust, and get back up. Remember that even the most skilled skiers began as beginners, learning one wobbly run at a time. Progress may be tough, but that’s how you get to the top. And in the end, it’s the journey up the mountain that makes the view worth it. #NeverGiveUp #KeepLearning #SalesSuccess #GrowthMindset

Do you need to be in the office full time to get a promotion?

Do you need to be in an office five days a week to get promoted? I read this in the paper at the weekend. Over the last year I have noticed a shift in attitude, with companies I recruit for wanting people to spend more time in the office, not five days a week as the article suggests but at least two or three. I personally go to the office a couple of days a week, and I don’t think I could cope without that interaction with the team. Fully remote would be a nightmare for me. However do I think that you need to be in the office five days a week to get promoted. No, I don’t Do I think that some time in the office would benefit your career? Definitely Yes!

It has been seven months since I posted this piece about how a 50 year old (me) still has at least 17 years good years left in them before retirement - 16 for me now! How are the rest of my fellow over 50's finding the job market this year? Still tough or signs of life?

This is just a reminder that a 50-year-old still has 17 years left before retirement. They still need to work. They have families relying on them. Yet sometimes, opportunities aren't given to them because they're "too old." But they're not. If 'life begins at 40', then why would it end at 50? I'm in my 50s, I still work out, I coach rugby and build Lego. My life is just beginning. There are 50+ year olds looking for work who can bring lots of experience and value to the table, and as recruiters, we shouldn't write them off. Many of our candidates that we place at Coburg Banks are 40/50+, and they go on to do extremely well. Because, there's more to a candidate than their age.

Work/Life Balance I saw this in a window display recently and it made me think about the new Employment Rights Bill going through Parliament. This includes the potential curtailment of work-related emails and calls outside of core working hours. Before the mobile phone – (I got my first one in 1996), this was never a problem and evening emails were not an issue until 1998 when I could access them from home using a massive lump of a PC. As a small business owner, and I imagine like most other people running small businesses, I take work calls whenever and wherever they occur – evenings, weekends, holidays. I have made that choice, much to the annoyance of my wife and kids. Do I expect this from people that work for me? No is the answer. It is important to have that cut-off between work and home and to get that balance right. Downtime is important and it makes for a much more productive team. So very much do as I say, not as I do, but there we go, that is the choice I made. Do I sometimes wish the phone was still tethered to the house? Absolutely, Yes!

So, yesterday morning, I had a top-notch candidate land on my desk, which means one thing: get that candidate to market! 🌟 Some of you might have received my email highlighting her key skills—most likely into junk or deleted without reading (I know, inboxes are wild these days! 📬🗑️). So, off I went hitting the phones. Called a domiciliary branch and met the ultimate gatekeeper. Instead of making me want to tear my hair out, she actually cheered up my day and made me giggle! 😂 Before I could even introduce my candidate, she told me they had just posted a job a few hours earlier. The response was so overwhelming that they shortlisted, interviewed, and offered the job within THREE HOURS. I mean, I’ve turned roles around in 24 hours, but this? That’s got to be a record! 🏅 In hindsight, maybe I should have called her back in the afternoon and asked, "Has the candidate dropped out yet?" 😜 Brightened up my dull Tuesday! 🌞 Anyway, if you need a domiciliary Registered Manager with experience growing branches, a Good CQC rating, based in West Sussex, drop me a message! 📩 #RecruitmentLife #SpeedyHires #GatekeeperGoals #Domiciliary #RegisteredManager
