  • [NEW Annual ALARM Report] Out today, the annual ALARM report, published by the Asphalt Industry Alliance (AIA) is now in it’s 30th year. Chair of the AIA David Giles commented “This year marks the 30th anniversary of the ALARM survey, which was introduced to gather information on local road conditions and funding in England and Wales directly from those responsible for their maintenance. We are indebted to the local authorities’ highway teams who take part and who, this year, led to a record response rate of almost 80%.” The survey has found that the average frequency of resurfacing for all classes of local roads is now once every 93 years, and one in every ten miles of carriageway is likely to require maintenance in the next 12 months. David added “There needs to be a complete change in mindset away from short-term to long-term funding commitments. Local authorities need a minimum five-year funding horizon and there needs to be a substantial, sustained increase in investment with budgets ring-fenced specifically for local roads maintenance. Investing to save in local roads – which support communities and enable connectivity – will allow local authorities to plan and provide better value for money.” David Giles is Director at Continental Bitumen, a Colas company. #ALARM2025 #30YearsOfALARM #LocalAuthorities #LocalRoads #RoadMaintenance #AsphaltIndustryAlliance #AIA

  • The Portsmouth PFI team has undertaken maintenance operations on the M275 motorway, a strategic road that serves as a key route in and out of the city. This road not only facilitates the movement of traffic throughout Portsmouth, but also connects to important regional routes, making it essential for economic activity and accessibility within the area. To ensure minimal disturbance for road users during maintenance activities, the team developed a plan to utilise a road booking space, prioritising strategic scheduling and completing several repairs to the road. This approach ensured that traffic disruptions were minimised while providing our crews with the necessary space to perform their tasks safely. The work, which took place during the third week of February, involved collaboration between Colas, the client, National Highways, and our supply chain partners to complete a range of essential tasks. Key activities included street cleansing, civil works, drainage clearance, graffiti removal, general repairs, and sweeping at Junction 12.

  • Today, we're hosting our annual International Women's Day event at The ICC, Birmingham, in collaboration with BOUYGUES UK, Equans UK & Ireland and Colas Rail UK.    The event is focused on how we can work together to break barriers, lead with resilience, and create a culture of inclusion so that everyone, regardless of gender or background, feels fully supported in their professional journey.    Women are continuing to push boundaries and challenge areas of inequality - but we know that true progress happens when all of us play our part. It's essential for each of us to champion gender equality within the workplace, through mentorship, support and empowerment, so that women can step into leadership and achieve their goals with confidence.    Hear more from a selection of our colleagues from across the UK on what accelerate action means to them below ⬇️   #InternationalWomensDay #IWD2025 #Inclusion

  • [Award Win ⭐] National Highways Industry Awards Last night, Colas attended the National Highways Industry Awards, and we are delighted to announce that we received the ‘Outstanding Customer Focused Initiative’ award in recognition of our strong commitment to fostering effective communication with all road users through our innovative customer awareness initiative. Communication barriers such as language differences and hidden disabilities can result in misunderstandings, including in incident response situations. To enhance communication with road users, the Area 9 team launched the customer focused initiative, which features a recovery phrase book with language cards based on common languages identified from road user data, translation apps, and the implementation of training on the Sunflower Lanyard Scheme to support individuals with hidden disabilities. Since its launch, the campaign has garnered positive feedback from both internal and external partners, and has been expanded within our business, as well as across other National Highways contracts. We are proud of the positive impact this initiative has made and remain dedicated to fostering a more inclusive environment for all road users. Congratulations to all involved in the initiative!

  • As our number one priority, the topic of Safety remains at the forefront of everything we do at Colas. At the start of the year, our regional teams gathered to reflect on the past year’s safety performance, refresh their training, and discuss goals for the year ahead. This week, the Grantham Specialist Processes team held their annual safety stand-down day, where a wide range of topics were discussed, and operatives needed know encouragement to participate actively in the dialogue. This engagement is vital as it helps to foster a culture of safety and responsibility among all team members. Similarly, our Cheshire West and Chester team hosted their annual Safety Induction event at the Chester Rugby Club. The event featured a mini 'exhibition' format, with various teams presenting on different stands to highlight key health and safety topics. With events taking place across the business, team members are provided with a vital opportunity to engage in the conversation about safety, reinforcing our commitment to a safe working environment.

  • [Collaboration 💛] Carriageway resurfacing in Area 9 We have recently carried out carriageway resurfacing on several key schemes within Area 9, including junctions on the M42, M5, M5, M6, and the A5 Churncote roundabout.   Our in-house surfacing experts collaborated with the Area 9 team and our supply chain partners, Breedon, DP Cold Planing, and Recomac, to harness collective knowledge and experience so that we can ensure seamless delivery of these schemes, enhancing the vital road network for a better customer experience.
