Co-Impact is a global collaborative focused on advancing inclusive systems change, gender equality, and women’s leadership through grant making and influencing philanthropy. We bring together a group of results-oriented funders, program partners and advisors who are pooling resources, networks, and expertise to enable lasting change at scale that will improve the lives of millions. Through our two funds, we aim to co-create more just, inclusive and gender-equitable health, education, and economic systems, and to advance women’s leadership, power and agency at all levels. We source and partner with locally-rooted and women-led initiatives in Africa, Asia, and Latin America that are working to address underlying conditions that perpetuate social inequities and provide them with significant and long-term grant and non-financial support to drive scalable and sustainable impact. Our approach builds on and supports the work and experience of civil society, government and philanthropic partners. With 2024 being a pivotal election year, the stakes are high for increasing female representation in government. As the U.S. election approaches this November, it's essential to recognize the impact that #WomenInLeadership can have on our society. In a powerful new article from the Center for Effective Philanthropy, Debby Bielak and Nidhi Sahni explore how to support women leaders, who are really driving meaningful change—from championing climate policies to enhancing public health. For instance, countries with greater female representation in government are more likely to adopt climate-friendly policies and boost public health spending, benefiting everyone. Yet, women—particularly women of color—remain underrepresented in leadership roles. So, how can funders help bridge this gap? In Kenya, young women face significant cultural stigma and barriers in accessing essential sexual and reproductive health services, often requiring parental consent. This leads to high rates of HIV infections and limited access to safe abortion services. Poverty also restricts access to contraception in many counties. That’s why the work of Nelly Munyasia and our program partners at the Reproductive Health Network Kenya (RHNK) is so important: their mission is to reduce maternal mortality and morbidity among adolescent girls and young women in Kenya. Established in 2010, RHNK champions Comprehensive Adolescence and Youth Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (AYSRHR). They do this by creating an enabling environment for young women to access sexual, reproductive and maternal health care. Through strategic partnerships and capacity-building initiatives, they emphasize inclusive and comprehensive abortion care. Over seven years of annual assessments, this year’s report uniquely separates data from the nonprofit (UN, multilateral, bilateral, NGOs, etc.) and for-profit sectors. 📊 Key findings include: Progress: Gender parity has been achieved among nonprofit board members—a significant milestone. Meeting people where they are: How our program partner Reproductive Health Network Kenya are transforming sexual and reproductive health services in Torosei, Kajiado County 🌍 Kenya’s maternal mortality ratio stands at 362 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births, with even higher rates in rural areas. Teenage girls (aged 15-19) face an even graver reality, with 464 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births, accounting for 1 in 3 maternal deaths in Kenya. “School is a space that everyone, all of us, will attend. If you transform this space, we have a concrete possibility for social transformation.” In Brazil, many black, indigenous and quilombola girls have their school trajectories punctuated by racism and sexism, which directly affects their school experience. The racial and gender-based violence they experience results in dropout, poor attendance and impaired learning, since school practices and content do not consider the personal and social experiences of these girls. Data from the School Census show that, in 2022, 6,921 black girls dropped out of school due to pregnancy, caring for the elderly or disability in the family. On today's #InternationalYouthDay, we are so excited to introduce our program partners at the Projeto Seta, an initiative dedicated to developing an anti-racist education system in Brazil. The Seta project is a powerful alliance of seven Brazilian organizations (ActionAid Brasil, Ação Educativa - Assessoria, Pesquisa e Informação, Campanha Nacional pelo Direito à Educação, Uneafro Brasil, Geledés Instituto da Mulher Negra, CONAQ and Makira E’ta) who amplify the voices and leadership of Black, Indigenous, and Quilombola groups. Their mission is to transform Brazil's public education ecosystem and institutionalize racial equality in policies and practice. Exciting news from Kenya: International Budget Partnership Kenya is now Bajeti Hub! In July, our Africa team had the pleasure of attending the relaunch ceremony of IBP Kenya, now known as Bajeti Hub. This change marks a new chapter in our program partners' journey of empowering citizens to understand and engage with public budgets, and collaborating with government representatives to ensure that budgets reflect citizens' views and priorities. A 2022 survey revealed that over 83% of Indian mothers encounter significant challenges with breastfeeding. Nearly half of these mothers experience physical difficulties. Despite these challenges, only 7% of mothers seek help from lactation experts. Instead, many turn to family and friends (66%) or online resources like YouTube (33%) for advice and support. Breast milk is all your new born baby needs! Through ARMMAN’s mHealth interventions, we guide new mothers about the right breastfeeding techniques, and support them through their breastfeeding journey. We emphasize on the importance of exclusive breastfeeding till the baby is six months old. Through our free voice call service, we provide critical preventive care information to women, supporting them through their pregnancy and infancy journey.
