Around the world, we make grants that support the visionary people and organizations who work to challenge inequality.
About us
The Ford Foundation is a global, grant-making philanthropy that works to disrupt inequality in all its forms. We believe in the inherent dignity of all people. But around the world, too many people are excluded from the political, economic, and social institutions that shape their lives. In addressing this reality, we are guided by a vision of social justice—a world in which all individuals, communities, and peoples work toward the protection and full expression of their human rights; are active participants in the decisions that affect them; share equitably in the knowledge, wealth, and resources of society; and are free to achieve their full potential. Across eight decades, our mission has been to reduce poverty and injustice, strengthen democratic values, promote international cooperation, and advance human achievement. We work in 11 regional offices around the world and support programs in more than 50 countries.

Today, we announced Maria Torres-Springer, the former first deputy mayor of New York City, will return to the foundation as a senior fellow. During her fellowship, Torres-Springer will examine how local leaders across the country can drive complex policy solutions in the areas of housing affordability, climate change, and economic insecurity in an increasingly challenging landscape. Before her work in the mayor’s office, Torres-Springer was vice president for US Programs at the Ford Foundation, leading domestic grantmaking efforts. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/etV-w9T2

This #CSW69 reviews the Beijing Platform for Action, a blueprint for human rights that reaffirmed that gender equality, bodily autonomy, and freedom from violence are fundamental human rights. It called for universal access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities—because human rights mean having the power for everyone to make choices about their bodies, their future and their lives. The Beijing Platform for Action set the agenda for gender equality, calling for an end to gender-based violence, child marriage and discrimination. Protecting these rights is not just a commitment—it’s a human rights obligation that all states should uphold. Women’s rights are human rights—this was the core message of the Beijing Platform for Action. However, nearly 30 years later, the fight continues to ensure that every girl and woman can live free from discrimination, violence and inequality. CSW69 is an opportunity for states to uphold their obligations to achieving gender equality. They must call for an end to gender-based violence, child marriage, and discrimination. Protecting these fundamental rights is not just a commitment, it’s a human rights obligation. Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) are human rights, as outlined in the Beijing Platform for Action. When people can access safe contraception, maternal healthcare, and protection from harmful practices, they can fully realize their rights and potential. Every person deserves the freedom to make informed choices about their body, health, and future—without fear, discrimination, or violence. #ProtectProgress

Climate change isn't just an environmental issue; it's a threat multiplier that inflames inequalities, particularly for women workers. Yet less than 0.1% of philanthropic funding addresses the intersection of gender and the environment. This Q&A, as part of the FORGE: Funders Organized for Rights in the Global Economy x Devex #WomenRising series, features visionary funders who discuss the alarming connection between climate impacts and increased gender-based violence and harassment across informal, industrial, and agricultural sectors. Hear from Ford's own Monica Aleman Cunningham, Jessica Brown of ClimateWorks Foundation, Laura Garcia of Global Greengrants Fund, Nivedita Jayaram of Women's Fund Asia, and Nicolette Naylor of Ubuntu Global Philanthropy & Gender Justice Consulting, on ways they are integrating funding for climate, labor, and gender justice. Let's break the silos to break the cycle of injustice. #CSW69 #IWD2025 #AccelerateAction #Beijing30

This International Women's Day, let's remember that delivering gender justice, and creating an environment where it can be achieved, takes all of us. One can make every economic or practical case for gender justice, but a society must be structured and stable enough to support it. That means solutions to the urgent challenges we face today—from economic inequality to climate change to digital safety—must include women and gender-diverse leaders. There are tremendous advantages to doing so, and equally large costs to bear if we don’t. Learn more from our International Program Director for Gender, Racial, and Ethnic Justice, Monica Aleman Cunningham. #CSW69 #IWD2025 #AccelerateAction #Beijing30
