Many thanks to our advisory board and other esteemed guests at the UK Compostable Coalition roundtable event just held in London.   Results from our research project were revealed for the first time to an audience that included key stakeholders from retailers and global brands to waste- management industry, local authorities, NGO’s and Gov. officials.   Here are a few highlights from our event:     1.      When provided with a distinctive label, consumers were well capable of discarding compostable packaging in relevant compost bins. Contamination levels in these bins have dropped as well!   2.      Compost produced by mixing compostable packaging (at a 5% load rate) with other bio-waste at EnVar composting facilities, achieved PAS100, UK’s high quality compost certificate.      3.      Replacing ~100K-200K tons of hard-to-recycle plastics with compostable alternatives results in a positive reduction of ~90-320 tons of GHG emissions.   4.       With over 1M tons of plastic not being recycled in the UK, replacing ~100K - 200K tons of hard- to -recycle plastics with compostable alternatives may result in avoidance of ~80-120K ton of plastic being incinerated/landfilled/treated via MBT in the UK.   5.      UK Government policies currently do not connect the dots between food waste, compost and soil fertility thus, further jeopardizing the preservation of fertile arable land and our food security.   Come see us at Packaging Innovations in Feb. where more from the Coalition’s work will be presented.
