Coram Family and Childcare is a national charity working to make the UK a better place for families.
About us
Coram Family and Childcare is a national charity working to make the UK a better place for families Our philosophy is based on championing parent-led solutions. We believe that working with parents to support them to make their communities a better place to live a fulfilling family life is the best way of creating positive, sustainable and lasting change for families. Our research and advocacy focuses on making the UK as supportive of fulfilling family lives as possible, and on holding central and local government to account for doing all it can to remove barriers for families. Our network of expert consultants work with local authorities, providers of family services such as childcare providers, and businesses to support them to deliver government initiatives and improve their quality of provision. Coram Family and Childcare coordinates the the National Association Family Information Services (NAFIS), the Parent Champions programme and the Young Dads Collective. We became known as Coram Family and Childcare when the Family and Childcare Trust joined the Coram group of charities in 2018. We bring over 40 years of experience in campaigning and research into family life and childcare.

We’re excited to kick off today’s launch of research funded by Nuffield Foundation on early education entitlements. Joining us are Ivana La Valle, Jane Lewis of THE CENTRE FOR EVIDENCE AND IMPLEMENTATION, Claire Crawford of UCL Centre for Education Policy and Equalising Opportunities (CEPEO), Maryam Makki of Reading Borough Council and Alison Morton of the Institute of Health Visiting (iHV). The report reveals the multi-level barriers that make it hard for families to take up early education entitlements, and what can be done nationally and locally to change this. The panel discuss the systemic issues preventing parents from taking up their funded entitlement, the variations in take-up across local authorities, and how local action can support parents in accessing their entitlements. The report investigates the changes in national policy, local authorities' work, and how early education settings provide the entitlements that will make early education more accessible to the families and children that stand to gain the most. New research published today reveals the barriers preventing parents taking up their 15 hours early education entitlements. Many families face restrictions in how they can take up their hours, and must often also pay additional charges, meaning the entitlement is not always free or fully accessible for eligible children. This research was funded by Nuffield Foundation-foundation, and conducted by THE CENTRE FOR EVIDENCE AND IMPLEMENTATION, UCL Centre for Education Policy and Equalising Opportunities (CEPEO), and Coram Family and Childcare with Ivana La Valle. The report recommends national policy changes and local policy actions that could help to ensure the funded entitlements are accessible and inclusive for all eligible children. It is London Challenge Poverty Week. London has the widest variations in child poverty rates in the UK, with 34% of children living in poverty. To tackle this, we need decent social housing, affordable and accessible childcare, timely access to healthcare, a fair social security system that meets essential needs and good quality jobs paying at least the London Living Wage: https://lnkd.in/dWt87gR #LDNChallengePoverty
