About us
The Cornhill Club was established in 1931 and is one of the City of London’s oldest banking institutions. The Club was originally formed by a group of ten bankers looking to meet regularly and discuss some of the hot topics that influenced their industry. This desire to be forward looking and stay in touch with latest developments in the banking industry remains central to the ethos of the club today. The “Banking Industry" has widened to become the “Financial Services Sector” and The Cornhill Club has changed with the times too. The Club continues to evolve in order to remain relevant today and in the future while maintaining the traditions and values central to the role of financial services in enhancing society. These traditions are central to our core values as a networking club. 1. Trust & Loyalty – to be a trusted member of, or affiliated to, the financial services community and to regularly attend dinners and events. 2. Inclusivity - it is not enough to be diverse. Only through diversity and inclusion will we continue to innovate and remain relevant 3. Chatham House Rules - be discrete, respect the confidence of members, guests, and speakers 4. Follow up – if our members say they will make contact they will 5. Energy – bring your energy to the table. Contribute to the discussion The Club provides its members with access to thought provoking, high calibre speakers and its followers will have access to online content. Joining the club as a member, or following our page is an excellent opportunity for industry newcomers and established professionals alike to hear from some of the sector’s most influential people, including CEOs of international financial institutions, fintech entrepreneurs, regulators, and some niche organisations that are at the forefront of financial services innovation.

✨ 2023/24 Season Recap: A Journey Through Innovation, Regulatory Change, Climate Change and Insightful Leadership ✨ Before we dive into our upcoming season of events, let's take a moment to reflect on the highlights from last season. 🚀 We kicked off with Jon Hammant, Head of Compute for Amazon EMEA, at an event sponsored by Be | Shaping the Future. Jon explored how cloud computing, AI, quantum computing, and other groundbreaking technologies will transform the global business landscape over the next decade. 🌍💡 In November, Mark Mullen, Chief Executive of Atom bank, shared his insights during “Challenging Times for Challenger Banks.” His thought leadership provided valuable perspectives on perseverance and staying focused in an ever-evolving industry. 💼🔍 After the festive break, we welcomed Sir Douglas Flint for a dinner in January. A former Cornhill Club President, CFO and Chair at HSBC, and current Chair at abrdn, Sir Douglas offered his reflections on the evolution of the financial services sector over the past 40 years. Another insightful evening, generously sponsored by Be Shaping the Future. 💭🏛️ February brought one of the most significant regulatory discussions in recent memory, led by Sheldon Mills, Executive Director at the Financial Conduct Authority. At the event sponsored by Shapes First, Sheldon breathed life into The Consumer Duty, sharing evidence and stories that truly showcased his passion for the subject. 📜⚖️ From consumers to climate, in March, Amber Rudd (former Home Secretary and Centrica Board member) discussed the ever-changing climate agenda and its implications for businesses. Her balanced, non-political approach resonated with a diverse audience from financial services and beyond. The event was sponsored by Albertine , who also offered a complimentary 30 day trial for all attendees🌱🌍 Our final dinner in May featured Ron Emerson CBE, and was sponsored by FXGuard Limited. Ron spoke on the practical aspects of “levelling up” and fostering an SME lending culture to drive economic growth in the UK. 💷🏗️ Our membership is ever expanding, including within our new under 30s membership category. As we gear up for the 2024/25 season, we extend our heartfelt thanks to our speakers and look forward to welcoming a stellar list of speakers next year, starting with Sam Woods CEO of the Prudential Regulation Authority (PRA) on the 25th September, sharing his outlook for prudential regulation in the UK. 🎉 #CornhillClub #Networking #FinancialServices #BankingAndFinance #ClimateChange #Sustainability #ConsumerDuty #RegulatoryCompliance #PaymentServices #RetailMortgage #SMELending

Thank you Ron Emerson CBE for a great evening and insight on levelling up and the critical impact it would have on the EK economy and society. This was a great finish to The Cornhill Club 23/24 season, before we recommence in September. We have speakers lined up to include Sam Woods CEO of the PRA, Erin Platts – CEO HSBC Innovation Bank (previously Silicon Valley Bank), Greg Jackson – founder and CEO of Octopus Energy, Bim Afolami MP for Hitchin and Harpenden and Economic Secretary to the Treasury and Bob Skinstad previous captain of the South African rugby team - the Springboks and now management consultant at Elixirr. The Cornhill Club Committee, members and their guests would like to say a big thank you to Ron Emerson CBE for an insightful after dinner talk yesterday evening. We discussed the practical, rather than political, aspects of the important subject of "levelling up" and how to build an SME lending culture that promotes economic growth in the UK. A very pleasant way to spend a Tuesday evening. #CornhillCLub #Networking #FinancialServices #BankingAndFinance #LevellingUp #NorthernPowerHouse #SMELending

The Cornhill Club committee, our members and their guests would like to say a big thank you to Amber Rudd. The subject, climate change, brought to life by a superb orator, and explained in terms that generated so many interesting questions. It was clear that everything that was said resonated with a diverse group of people from financial services and beyond. No political bias, just a responsible account of the real climate and energy challenges that we face as a species. #CornhillClub #Networking #FinancialServices #BankingAndFinance #ESG #Sustainability #ClimateChange #EnergyMarkets

We are very much looking forward to welcoming The Cornhill Club members and their guests to our next dinner on Tuesday March 19th. On Tuesday we will hear from Amber Rudd (former Home Secretary in the United Kingdom) talk to us about how the climate change agenda is changing and what that might mean. Amber Rudd helped negotiate the Paris climate agreement in 2015 while energy minister and currently serves on the Board at Centrica. At Centrica she serves as a member on several committees, including the Environment & Sustainability Committee. #CornhillClub #Networking #FinancialServices #BankingAndFinance #ESG #Sustainability #ClimateChange #EnergyMarkets

The Cornhill Club Committee would like to thank our speaker Sheldon Mills (Executive Director, Consumers and Competition) from the Financial Conduct Authority in the UK for talking to our members and guests yesterday evening about the Consumer Duty. He brought the subject to life with anecdotes and evidence in a way that only someone who cares passionately about a subject can. We look forward to seeing you again at a future dinner. #CornhillClub #Networking #FinancialServices #BankingAndFinance #RegulatoryCompliance #RiskManagement #PaymentServices #ConsumerDuty
