CREATe reposted this
This week, in IP & the public interest: - Jan 24th: join CREATe and More than Just a Game at Bath Spa University for a symposium on creative regulation in games featuring over 20 participants including Dr Sevra Guler Guzel, Abigail Rekas, Kristofer Erickson, and Maria O'Brien! - With the US Supreme Court yet to rule, the bipartisan TikTok ban is expected to go into effect this Sunday, Jan 19 - effectively setting fire to a speech platform 170 million Americans use and the content they've shared there. The US didn't make the Boomers' rock 'n roll illegal, or my generation's video games, but it appears poised to effectively declare Gen Z's culture unworthy of being protected speech and assembly. The grounds: digital privacy, which it has otherwise refused to meaningfully regulate. I offer more thoughts, including on the challenges of building a social media presence. - Meanwhile, Google, Amazon and McDonald's shift corporate jargon to be friendlier to the incoming administration, as Facebook makes a series of more substantial decisions that will likely make the platform an even bigger soup of misinformation, AI slop, and difficult-to-use interfaces. - In the newest mod of the 1993 classic Doom, enjoy wine and hors d'oeuvres as you wander a revised E1M1 map gazing at pixelated classics in the Western art canon.
