🚨 New Publication Alert! 🚨 We’re excited to share the results of our latest qualitative study: "Experiences and Impacts of Contraceptive Side Effects in the UK: Exploring Individual Narratives." 🔍 Purpose: While contraception is widely used, there’s limited research on how women experience side effects. Our study aimed to fill this gap by gathering personal stories from 337 women aged 18-35 in the UK. 📝 Methods: Participants shared their experiences via free-text responses, which we analyzed through a directed content analysis approach to uncover 6 key themes for a coding framework: contraception method, side effects, impact, timing, healthcare interactions, and trial-and-error. 💡 Results: The experiences were diverse. While many reported negative side effects like mental health challenges and bleeding, some shared positive outcomes, especially around bleeding control. Participants also expressed feeling unheard by healthcare professionals. 👩⚕️ Conclusion: This study highlights the importance of individualized, patient-centered contraceptive care. It’s clear that no two experiences are the same—healthcare practitioners can play an active role in listening and responding to patients' unique needs and preferences. BMI changes with contraceptive implants? 🤔 A new study found that adolescents and young adults using the etonogestrel implant had a small increase in BMI over 36 months, similar to those using DMPA, but these changes aren't seen as clinically concerning. This data is key to supporting more informed, personalized counseling around contraceptive options, particularly for young people starting the etonogestrel implant. With World Contraception Day yesterday and Safe Abortion Day tomorrow, we’re reminded of the critical need to empower women and people with uteruses to make informed, personalized decisions about their health. 💙 Around the world, 257 million people want to use contraception but do not have access. This lack of access leads to 121 million unintended pregnancies every year, and 45% of abortions globally are unsafe. These challenges also affect people here in the UK, where 1 in 3 women will have an abortion by age 45. My new BBC article is out now in stores - this is an issue close to my heart as a doctor who prescribed many different hormonal contraceptions to women - we have a lot to change! There are a myriad of side effects that we as society expect women to put up with without really trying to change the status quo and making contraception better. However, Dama Health is doing just that - understanding that there is a role for hormonal contraception but ensuring that it is better tailored to a woman through personalised medicine and genetic testing.
