Fantastic DBA Members' Forum yesterday talking about doing work internationally. High energy session packed full of great advice: 1. PR your work - international brands are watching. 2. Employ native language speakers. 3. Invest in freelancers until you find the right people to employ. 4. Grow your business in markets you love. 5. Think of 'export' as new relationships and not new business. 6. Talk to others who have gone before you. 7. Creative reputation and caché come with being a UK agency. 8. Sometimes boots on the ground makes sense - but you can do 100% of your work for international clients from a UK studio. 9. Have a sense of adventure, but don't go anywhere you wouldn't be happy to take your kids to! 10.... I could go on (I do have another 17 points that I wrote down) but then there would be no point in you joining these sessions! I've not shared what I think the three best bits of advice were because I want to encourage you to engage with organisations like the DBA and D&AD, or business organisations in the sectors you service as design consultancies. And by engage I mean join. Your financial contributions make sessions like yesterday's possible. Your membership fees enable us to work for you and champion you, and I promise that attending a DBA event/forum will never be a waste of your time. DBA members will get a full list of advice on email today because we know their diaries are rammed, and if they could have made the Zoom call they would have been there. What they've missed is that sense you get of belonging to an industry, and how you're not in this alone. They've missed the enthusiasm that everyone had for the subject, and their opportunity to grow their network around export as a subject. Growing international clients feels very much more doable today than it did last week. So thank you Alex Bane, Sally Forsyth Spark, Tim Mutton, Julie Oxberry; Mark Lawrence Saunders and Jonny Westcar for your invaluable contributions.
