About us
The Design Society is an association of individuals across the world who deeply care about design: How we create new artefacts and systems, how we think about this creation process, and what is the impact of human-created artefacts on the world we live in and on ourselves. We express our caring for design through our efforts in research, education, practice, and outreach. Objectives The objectives of the Society are to promote the development and propagation of design knowledge across all disciplines by: - creating and evolving a formal body of knowledge about design and designing; - supporting and improving design research, education practice, and management; - promoting co-operation among design researchers, practitioners, educators and managers; - promoting design publications and their dissemination; - organising international and national conferences, workshops, and student events; - operating Special Interest Groups on different design topics and regional Chapters; - co-operating with other bodies with similar and complementary design interests.

Congratulations Alex 👏
I won 'Best Student Presentation' at this year's Engineering & Product Design Education conference (E&PDE 2024) by The Design Society & Institution of Engineering Designers, hosted at Aston University. It was a lovely time visiting so close to home and talking with so many people about the future effects and influences of AI in design education. Huge shout-out to my wonderful co-author and fellow Product Design MA graduate Haizea Perez ♥️ My presentation was based on work I did within the SPARC research team at OsloMet – Oslo Metropolitan University, where we developed a communicative AI NPC utilizing Inworld AI, 'feeding' it all the qualitative data and studies we did throughout the year. You can check out a video of the AI in action here: https://lnkd.in/egv6sFnK And you can read the paper here: BRIDGING THE RELATIONAL GAP: SYSTEMIC DESIGN AND AI, SPARC-ING SUSTAINABLE EDUCATION IN UNIVERSITIES https://lnkd.in/eQHE7qde

We are excited to have submitted 6 contributions to this year's #NordDesign24 conference, co-hosted by the University of Iceland (Háskóli Íslands) and Reykjavik University in beautiful Reykjavik. The NordDesign conference, a key event in engineering design, focused on ‘Design with/for/by AI,’ offering a fantastic platform for invaluable discussions within The Design Society. The exploration of AI’s role in shaping the future of design continues to inspire us at Stuttgarter Maschinenbau for the Universität Stuttgart. 💪 A huge thank you to the organizers for hosting such an inspiring event in such a wonderful setting. Special congratulations to our colleagues Lars Gadermann and Benedikt Müller, whose contributions were recognized as ‘Reviewers’ Favorite’. 👏 The IKTD contributions can be found as open access publications here: “Increasing Acceptance Through Design: Review of Evaluation Methods for Interaction Design in Mixed Traffic” by Lars Gadermann, Daniel Holder, Thomas Maier https://lnkd.in/e6rhXMpp “Survey of the Role of Domain Experts in Recent AI System Life Cycle Models” by Benedikt Müller, Daniel Roth Matthias Kreimeyer https://lnkd.in/eTRBaqye “Investigation of the Use of Aluminum Foam Sandwich in Battery Housings for Electric Vehicles” by Charlotte Breuning, Patrick Hommel, Daniel Roth Matthias Kreimeyer https://lnkd.in/ehY2QSG3 “Towards a Methodological Framework for the Development and Operation of Smart Product-Service Systems” by Yevgeni Paliyenko, Daniel Roth Matthias Kreimeyer https://lnkd.in/eggiMg4p “Investigation Into the Suitability of Existing Evaluation Methods for Application with Circular Product Architectures in Early Development Phases” by Merlin Stölzle, Daniel Roth Matthias Kreimeyer https://lnkd.in/edAzACeF “Automated Retrieval of Functional Relations from Machine Parts CAD-Data” by Jonas Fastabend, Daniel Roth Matthias Kreimeyer https://lnkd.in/ersDviAC #iktd #norddesign #conference #iceland #stuttgartermaschinenbau #unistuttgart

Introducing the newest addition to our Special Interest Groups (SIGs), a new website dedicated to the SIG will soon be available!
We are happy to announce the new Special Interest Group: Design Research Quality in the The Design Society The aim of the SIG is to enhance the quality of design research, celebrating the value derived from the field’s diversity in perspectives, methodologies, outputs, and impact. To do this we aim to provide concrete and practical support, systems, and structures that can benefit and bring together the wider design research community. We want to do this in a way that makes quality transparent and accessible for the whole design research community, accelerating and democratizing the evolution of design research practices. To this end we want to establish a diverse and equitable leadership team able to help bridge design research communities. We are thus looking for people to help increase representation and diversity in the leadership team. The current leadership team of the SIG is: Philip Cash Romain Pinquié Jaap Daalhuizen Joshua D. Summers If you would be interested in joining the team or simply being involved with the SIG as a contributor or only getting updates we would love to hear from you! It was an honor to present our published paper about Co-Design and AI last week to The Design Society's Engineering and Product Design Education Conference held at Aston University in Birmingham England. Collaborating with Addie Payne Morgan and Bryan Howell has been such a rewarding experience. Thank you to all who took part in our condensed Vizcom paper experience. The full paper can be read here: https://lnkd.in/gr7kiBkz
Last week, I had the opportunity to present the paper I wrote with Grace Kilbourn-Barber and Bryan Howell at the The Design Society’s Engineering and Product Design Education Conference at Aston University in Birmingham, UK. Earlier this year, we completed a research workshop with the Crocker Innovation Fellowship at BYU to explore how we can empower end users in visual communication by working with AI tools. A huge thank you to Bryan Howell for his incredible mentorship and guidance to his students, past and present. The full paper can be read here: https://lnkd.in/gr7kiBkz

#EPDE at Aston University was a great success! It was also showtime as I presented the fully functioning Artificial Design Tutor. The Design Society’s #design #education track, themed ”Rise of the machines,” inspired numerous innovative ideas. I was thrilled to contribute with a total of four papers and a workshop, in collaboration with Ross Brisco, where we set out to map the current AI terrain in Design Education. Besides meeting up with dear colleagues and connecting with new ones, the biggest takeaway was an incredible surge of energy. Read more about the ADT here: https://lnkd.in/d8-ePpPD

Thanks to all the delegates who attended the workshop day of the Engineering and Product Design Education Conference at Aston University, Birmingham. I hosted 'Navigating the AI Terrain: Mapping Knowns and Unknowns in Design Education' with Anders Berglund. In the workshop, we mapped the publications on AI at this year's conference to identify the knowns of the E&PDE community, and the future research opportunities. Later, with Lou Grimal, we hosted the The Design Society sponsored Early Career Social Event. We welcomed young, and less young delegates to engage in networking and discussion about research in the wonderful Aston Students' Union. I look forward to the rest of the week, to engage in thoughtful discussions on AI in engineering education.
