Judith Leemann and Kenneth Bailey are back in the Center for Design this week for their StudyLab residency. The exhibition is still open for interaction this evening and tomorrow! Participate in activities set up by the artists. Draw an object without looking at your paper. Describe an object while touching, but not being able to see it. Use objects to explain a concept nonverbally. Please join us! Coming together around the provocation, “For the Vibrancy of Needs,” this residency is a cross- and anti-disciplinary inquiry into theories and embodiments of justice rooted in experiences of common need. Drawing diversely on aesthetics, somatics, design methodologies, art-making, close reading, counter-archiving, and activism, the inquiry sites itself precisely at the border of the university and the community in which it is embedded, with an aim to transforming and re-imagining the relations this border tries to fix. The StudyLab is part of #AHTWeeks2024. The Center for Design has launched a new research project! 💡 This project aims to foster traveler empowerment in airport transfers through collaborative design workshops. The research team developed a theory-based empowerment framework applied to the traveling experience and created a design workshop series in which participants reflect upon and collectively derive design criteria to improve the airport experience for travelers. During the month of October, Kenneth Bailey and Judith Leemann of the Design Studio for Social Intervention join as Visiting Fellows at Northeastern University’s Arts & Humanities Social Action Lab in a collaboration with Kris Manjapra. They will host a StudyLab at the Center for Design from October 2-4. Visit us next week to see and interact with their work. We had a full house last night as we hosted Boston CHI and Aditya Ponnada, PhD! Ponnada gave a talk, entitled Scaling Experience Sampling with Microinteractions, where he talked about his work in human-computer interaction, behavior science and user experience. Introducing our 2024-2025 Bridges Fellow, Sofía Bosch Gómez! Sofía B. is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Art + Design at College of Arts, Media and Design (CAMD) at Northeastern University. She is also affiliated with The Burnes Center for Social Change and The GovLab. As a designer and researcher, Bosch Gómez is interested in the intersection of public service innovation, design research, and education. Her fellowship project, “Co-Designing a Network of Public Sector Design Scholars and Practitioners in Latin America,” aims to establish a network of scholars and practitioners in the field of design for policymaking across Latin America while generating data to map the current landscape. As part of this fellowship, she will be expanding the CfD’s research initiatives into the field of civic design. We are thrilled to have her on board!
