The use of digital measures within clinical trials and in health care is no longer the thing of dreams, it is happening. BUT, if we are to fully realize their value and use it is vital that we all "speak" the same language. The essential building blocks of consistent terminologies and definitions need to be aligned across all stakeholders. To that end, a great team came together and wrote a paper, "Why Language Matters in Digital Endpoint Development: Harmonized Terminology as a Key Prerequisite for Evidence Generation". So excited to announce the publication of our latest work, hot off the press to read today! The science, product and tech team at Healios reviewed and synthesised the existing evidence about currently available digital biomarker tools for autism that are accessible through a mobile phone. Key highlights: 📱 One commercial and three research digital biomarker tools aimed at aiding the diagnosis of autism were found, each of which evaluated the accuracy and validity of their product with reported metrics 📊 A lack of details around participants' demographics was apparent and, where these were reported, we observed important imbalances in gender and ethnicity 🔍 Evaluation methods as well as accuracy and validity metrics were not clearly reported in some cases, and varied greatly across studies, significantly impacting the comparability and generalizability of the products 💡 We highlight the need for standardized validation processes and reporting of findings when evaluating digital biomarker tools. Furthermore, evaluating these tools in diverse populations is needed to assess their real-world usability and validity Overall, despite their increasing popularity, systematic evaluations and syntheses of the current state of the art of available digital biomarker products for autism are lacking. This review will help to aid clinicians, researchers, and end users in making decisions as to their adoption within clinical and research settings.
