About us
Diverse City is an award winning charity committed to diversity and equality in the arts. • What do we do? • Diversity is central to our name, our art, and our values. Our mission is to make extraordinary shows that represent the world as it actually is. We want to break barriers and transform performance to change the lives of performers, audiences and communities. Our dream is a world where all identities are respected and valued. • How do we do this? • We create exceptional shows with a diversity of artists. We reveal hidden stories, silenced voices and excluded talents. We make unlikely alliances that increase representation in the arts on and off stage and in the audience. We champion inclusive practice through training & coaching.

“all too often, we design cities as if people with disabilities don’t exist—or worse, as if they don’t matter.” Fantastic blog post by Cyprine Odada who came to watch our recent #ExtraordinaryBodies R&D at the weekend hosted at Woodland Star International School Kenya. Thank you so much for coming with your family, and sharing your vision for a world without barriers! 🌍 🪩 😁 Extraordinary Bodies (UK) and Pamoja Dance Group (Kenya) present ‘Earth, Wheels, Air’, an Unlimited International Open Award 2024 commission made possible thanks to funding from British Council. Project partners include Theatre Royal Plymouth, Head Over Wheels, The Sarakasi Trust and Woodland Star International School Kenya. Urban Planner| Sustainable Mobility Expert l Remarkable Woman in Transport 2023 | Young Leader in Sustainable Transport 2020 | TEDX speaker 2019. I believe in humanity and being a changemaker.
Over the weekend, my family and I attended a breathtaking performance titled "EarthWheelsAir," brought to life by the incredible talents of @extraordinarybodies and @pamojadanse, and graciously hosted by @woodlandstarinternational. While the dance pieces had nothing to do with transport or urban planning, I found myself unexpectedly moved to reflect on both. Watching these dancers, each with different physical abilities, perform with such grace, power, and joy, left me in awe—but also with a heavy heart. Their joy on stage stood in stark contrast to the challenges they likely face navigating spaces that are not built for them. Anyway, I decided blog my thoughts on the performance. Please have a read and let me know what you think.

“We are artists. The conditions we face have turned us into acrobats.” — Joseph Kanyenje, Artistic Director, Pamoja Dance Group. 🌍✨ The Earth, Wheels, Air Research and Development project has officially kicked off in Nairobi this week, and we couldn’t be more proud of the incredible work emerging from this collaboration between Extraordinary Bodies (Cirque Bijou Ltd and Diverse City) and Pamoja Dance Group. Huge thanks to Alice Chutter, our producer, whose dedication has made this all happen! Check out these images of Pamoja Dance Group alongside Jonny, Tilly, and Daniella from Extraordinary Bodies and Head Over Wheels, as they push the boundaries of circus and dance. This collaboration has sparked so much excitement for the future of #EarthWheelsAir. With the right support, we hope to bring this work to a wider audience and fully realise its potential! We’re buzzing with ideas and can’t wait to share more about our time here in Kenya. Stay tuned for updates! Alt text: The images show a diverse group of individuals performing acrobatics in a large room with high ceilings at Woodland Star International School Kenya. Some artists are rigged up to aerial systems, working with others on the ground to create dynamic shapes and movement. Jonny is in his wheelchair, connected with Tilly, while two Pamoja Dance members, including Kriza Brown Mandela, hold on, forming beautiful collaborative shapes. Another image shows the full team smiling at the camera, and a final image captures the artists exploring Nairobi city centre together on a rest day. #DanceThroughMidLife and be a #MidLifeWarrior! Last week, I met with the fabulous Caro Boss, Communications Queen of Diverse City, to dive into all things voice, vision and messaging for the amazing programmes coming up, including Mid Life, which will be touring from February 2025. The creative team and cast of Mid Life were hard at work at Brighton Dome & Brighton Festival making use of their wonderful creative space, #AnitasRoom. As well as working on the show, they were joined by an exceptional group of people for a #MidLifeWarrior Workshop, followed by a choreographed boogie led by the brilliant Vicki Igbokwe, with Rosie Powell capturing it all on camera for the trailer. You can see a sneak peak of that energy in one of the images here! Caro couldn’t stop raving about her time in Brighton: "It was a joyful, inspiring week, and a pleasure to be surrounded by so many talented, generous women. We cannot wait to start sharing the images and the trailer when it’s ready, but here’s a little taste of the atmosphere to whet your appetites." Also, here's a pic of me meeting Caro IRL, getting my official Diverse City t-shirt and the mighty Mid Life Warrior pin badge which I proudly wear! (can't you tell from my ridiculously excited face 😉 ) You'll be able to get hold of your pin badge soon, just you wait and see. Alt text: Image 1. Two women are smiling and posing for a selfie. 🌍🌬️🚲 Just launched! We are thrilled to share the ‘Earth, Wheels, Air’ project trailer, now live on the Extraordinary Bodies website! This groundbreaking collaboration brings together the UK’s first integrated circus company, Extraordinary Bodies (UK) (a collaboration between Cirque Bijou Ltd and Diverse City), and Kenya’s leading inclusive contemporary dance company, Pamoja Dance Group. ‘Earth, Wheels, Air’ kicks off its Research and Development phase in Kenya next week! The project transcends borders, celebrating diverse talent and creating an entirely new artistic collaboration. Through this process, we are dismantling barriers and welcoming the next generation of d/Deaf and disabled artists into the creative fold—breaking stigma and growing the talent pipeline across both Kenya and the UK. “We are artists. The conditions we face have turned us into acrobats.” — Joseph Kanyenje, Pamoja Dance Group. ‘Earth, Wheels, Air’ is an Unlimited International Open Award 2024 commission made possible thanks to funding from British Council. We are proud to partner with Theatre Royal Plymouth, Head Over Wheels, Sarakasi Trust, and Woodland Star International School Kenya (where the first R&D in Kenya will be hosted). This project launches with residencies in both Nairobi and Plymouth, leading to sharings in both countries.
