To celebrate Black History Month we want to recognise and celebrate the invaluable contributions of our colleagues by giving them a platform to share their story. Here is Hussein Assani's. Tell us about your role at Dorchester Collection. I am a Senior Facilitator at Dorchester Collection Academy. Our department has two primary purposes: providing bespoke training to our valued clients from various luxury industries and supervising the learning & development of our legendary employees across the Collection. A significant portion of my role is to create, design and deliver bespoke training modules based on our clients' needs. I also own the development and implementation of our internal LEARN modules, which are training sessions aimed at nurturing the continuous growth of the teams of our corporate headquarters and hotels. What has been your proudest achievement during your time at Dorchester Collection? My first proudest achievement was when I joined the company almost six years ago as part of the pilot team of our now award-winning Global Contact Centre. During my time in this department, I received a Pursuit of Excellence award for my contribution. The second proudest achievement I can think of is ongoing. Our academy's vision is ‘Helping People to Flourish’, and I always find it very rewarding when we receive feedback from clients or colleagues sharing how our training helps them flourish in their professional journey. Why is Black History Month important to you? Being biracial from a white French Corsican mum and a black Beninese dad, I feel enriched by my mixed heritage; however, I was often faced with the challenge of finding my place between these two very different cultures. When it comes to positive black culture narrative, I experienced it was almost non-existent at school and in the media growing up. Hence, Black History Month is an important celebration for me because it recognises and celebrates my black heritage as well as the worldwide rich and diverse contributions of many black individuals to society, culture, and history over the centuries.   What does a diverse workforce look like to you? To me, a diverse workforce is where we value not just with words but also with actions the inclusivity of people from different backgrounds and national origins. It’s also a place where people feel they genuinely belong and are represented at all levels of a company hierarchy. I find it great that at Dorchester Collection, we periodically have the chance to attend educative and insightful workshops with guest speakers promoting diversity and inclusion. From a broader perspective, I think diversity is one component that makes the world beautiful. Therefore, I try to seize every opportunity to celebrate diversity not only in the workplace but also in life. #BlackHistoryMonth #BelongToTheLegend #CreateYourLegacy (Photo credit: Chan Mya Soe)

September was filled with staff events at The Beverly Hills Hotel After working hard all summer, they all deserved some time to switch off. They hosted a week of celebrations for Housekeeping Appreciation, where departments across the hotel hosted different activities. The festivities ended with a join celebration for Stewarding and Housekeeping departments, with great food and fun raffles. They also held their annual End of Summer Picnic for employees and their families. It was a day filled of fun, activities and treats. What a lovely way to bond and strengthen relationships and also foster a sense of belonging. #WhyWeCare #BelongToTheLegend #CreateYourLegacy

Yesterday marked the first day of Black History Month, and the theme for 2024 is reclaiming narratives. This theme focuses on not just correcting historical inaccuracies, but also sharing stories of Black history and culture. With that, we want to recognise and celebrate the invaluable contributions of our colleagues during Black History Month by giving them a platform to share their story. We are starting our series with Larissa Bowyer: Tell us about your role at Dorchester Collection. As Guest Experience & Operations Coordinator, I provide essential administrative support to our Global Guest Experience team, ensuring that our guests and residents receive exceptional service with consistency across all DC properties. I collaborate closely with our hotel and residence teams to support guest-centric projects and initiatives that align with our strategic goals. I gained valuable experience on the Ultimate Leaders Programme at The Dorchester and Coworth Park. What’s your favourite thing about working at Dorchester Collection? I appreciate the commitment to employee development, supportive work environment, and global opportunities. The company's pursuit of excellence, coupled with its focus on guest satisfaction, creates a challenging yet fulfilling experience. One of the most rewarding aspects of working at Dorchester Collection is the opportunity to learn from experienced professionals and develop my skills in a luxury hospitality environment. The company's investment in employee training and development has been instrumental in my career growth. What has been your proudest achievement during your time at Dorchester Collection? One of my proudest achievements was successfully managing high-profile events at The Dorchester and Coworth Park, ensuring seamless execution despite unexpected challenges. I also take pride in building strong relationships with colleagues across various departments, fostering a collaborative and supportive environment. Why is Black History Month important to you? As a biracial woman, Black History Month is significant for me. It's a time to reflect on the historical struggles faced by Black communities and the ongoing need for advocacy. I'm committed to promoting inclusion, diversity, and equality for all. While I experience a unique perspective, I am always mindful of the challenges faced by individuals from diverse backgrounds. I believe that it's important to create inclusive spaces where everyone feels valued and respected. What does a diverse workforce look like to you? A diverse workforce values individuals from various backgrounds, cultures, and perspectives. It fosters innovation and creates a more inclusive environment. Organizations should prioritize diversity and inclusion initiatives, including training, policies, and fostering open dialogue. At Dorchester Collection, I'm proud to be part of a diverse team that brings together individuals from around the world. #BlackHistoryMonth #WhyWeCare

Last week we held our quarterly Townhall with the CEOs at our Corporate Office in London. To get people energised and get their creative juices flowing, we organised an activity to design a Fashion Week invitation, since we're in the midst of the Fashion Month. They got very creative and came up with some wonderful creations. Activities like these get people working together and strengthen bonds between colleagues. We then got company updates and goals for the rest of the year and beyond. We are ready for busy months ahead. #CreateYourLegacy #WhyWeCare #BelongToTheLegend
