Protecting Air Ambulance Operations: A Case for Enhanced Drone Detection at Urban HLS Sites As drone activity continues to rise, we are seeing new challenges for air ambulance operations in urban areas. Recent data from Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth, where we detected six separate drones flying within 1 km of their helicopter landing site (HLS), brings this issue to the forefront. This proximity to critical emergency zones raises the question: could low-cost, localised drone detection systems help protect air ambulance crews and patients in busy urban environments? While pilots remain vigilant, the complexity of urban airspace often means added risks, particularly as drones become more prevalent. With this in mind, we’re exploring whether scalable, cost-effective detection solutions might offer HLS sites an additional layer of safety, alerting teams to potential hazards before they impact flight operations. We're reaching out to industry stakeholders and charities such as the HELP Appeal - County Air Ambulance Trust to understand if they see value in this approach. As always, collaboration and input from airspace experts, air ambulance teams, and emergency response professionals will be invaluable as we navigate these shared airspace challenges. #DroneSafety #AirAmbulance #UrbanHLS #AviationSafety #DroneDetection

🚨 Recent Government Figures Reveal Alarming Surge in Drone Incursions at UK Prisons 🚨 The latest government data reveals an exponential rise in drone activity across UK prisons—a trend with severe implications for safety and security nationwide. Despite stricter regulations introduced earlier this year, the scale of these incursions is staggering, with prisons facing daily challenges from drones used for smuggling, surveillance, and disruption. We receive enquiries from UK prisons almost every week, highlighting the urgency of this issue. Frontline prison staff are bearing the brunt of these threats, yet current government measures are simply not keeping up with the scale of the problem. Missed Opportunities: Recently, tens of millions were reportedly spent to make a single prison’s windows ‘drone-proof.’ With that same budget, our SkyFence system—active since 2018 at Guernsey Prison—could have protected over 80 facilities across the UK. SkyFence uses electronic countermeasures to create Smart, Secured Airspace, stopping drones from entering restricted zones without affecting essential communications. The Way Forward: It’s time for a shift in strategy. The evolving security landscape demands smart, scalable technologies that can be deployed nationwide. Our solutions provide real-time, effective countermeasures tailored for the modern prison environment. We believe in delivering Smart, Secured Airspace that addresses today’s threats with precision and reliability. Let’s turn this growing awareness into action and protect every facility across the UK. 🔹 Learn more about SkyFence and our comprehensive suite of counter-drone solutions to ensure security in our correctional facilities. Together, we can create a safer, more secure future for all. HM Prison and Probation Service (HMPPS), National Protective Security Authority (NPSA) https://lnkd.in/eTgY8-iW

🌍 Unlocking New Opportunities in Atypical Air Environment (AAE) Operations 🚁 As drone operations expand beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS), securing approval for an Atypical Air Environment (AAE) is becoming more important—and more complex. At Drone Defence, we are committed to helping you navigate this process by offering a powerful airspace monitoring solution. Introducing AeroSentry One, a multi-layered detection system designed to monitor both drones and general aviation traffic. This system can provide empirical data on air activity in a specific area, a crucial step in supporting your AAE application. Here's how AeroSentry One can assist: ✅ Pre-Application: Collect and present real-time data on airspace activity, helping you build a strong case for your AAE Operational Risk Assessment (ORA). ✅ Post-Approval: Once your AAE is granted, AeroSentry One can continue to monitor the airspace, ensuring that your operations remain compliant and safe. By offering a clear picture of the airspace environment, AeroSentry One reduces the risk of mid-air collisions (MAC) and supports safer, more efficient drone operations. Whether you're planning to operate near infrastructure or in complex airspaces, AeroSentry One is your solution for airspace awareness and monitoring. Let us help you unlock the future of unmanned aviation. #DroneDefence #AeroSentryOne #AirspaceMonitoring #AAE #BVLOS #DroneDetection #AviationSafety #UAS #AirspaceSafety HEROTECH8, Dronecloud, FlytBase, ARPAS-UK, NATS, Civil Aviation Authority

£22m spent on anti drone windows at one prison vs SkyFence for all Cat A & B prisons. Recent reports from The Evening Standard highlight a growing issue in UK prisons—drones delivering contraband like drugs directly into prison yards. A significant example is HMP Wandsworth, where illicit deliveries have prompted a £22 million investment in window upgrades to curb this problem. However, with that budget, prisons across the country could have adopted a much more effective and forward-thinking solution: Drone Defence technology. At Drone Defence, we've seen first-hand the effectiveness of our SkyFence system, which has been successfully safeguarding Guernsey Prison for years. By using electronic countermeasures, SkyFence prevents drones from flying into restricted areas by disrupting their command and navigation signals. With a modest investment of £250,000, HMP Wandsworth could have implemented this cutting-edge solution, blocking smuggling attempts 24/7, in any weather, without the need for constant human monitoring. The costs are clear: with the £22 million spent on window upgrades for just one prison, every Category A and B prison in the UK could have been equipped with SkyFence, significantly reducing the impact of drone smuggling across the entire prison network. It's time for prisons to embrace modern security solutions that address 21st-century problems head-on. To learn more about how SkyFence can safeguard critical infrastructures and facilities from drone-related threats, get in touch with us today. #DroneDefence #SkyFence #PrisonSecurity #CounterDroneTech #AviationSecurity #InnovationInSecurity Alan Drinkwater, HM Prison and Probation Service (HMPPS), National Protective Security Authority (NPSA), Charles Hymas, Rory Stewart https://lnkd.in/ewZS34GM

Drone flights in Jersey are putting the “3 x Is” in ALIAS   Our Innovate UK Future Flight Challenge funded consortium project, ALIAS (Agile & Integrated Airspace System) has recently been showcased by the BBC as a demonstration of future aviation capability. The current three-week period of flight trials in Jersey have captured the attention of our industry and the public.   These flight trials have three main priorities: integration, integration and integration. Without the ability to integrate with the various elements of the consortium’s technology, ATC (Air Traffic Control) and other airspace users, there is no viable means to scale an ITM (Integrated Traffic Management) system.   Consortium partners are currently integrating and testing the whole system within a live ATC environment with the ambition to work very closely with the Ports of Jersey ATM system in the future. The culmination of this work will be a template for a fully operational, ITM system.   This opens up the door to inter-island delivery flights, agricultural health monitoring, medical logistic services, and the enhancement of public services such as SAR (Search and Rescue) and fisheries patrols. Although the current ALIAS trials are conducted within a temporary restricted area, lovingly know as the RA(T), we are gathering the evidence needed to gradually evolve the ALIAS system into unsegregated airspace operations.   Watch the video, we would love to hear your feedback.
