Please email to attend the in-person workshop at IBM (London) in partnership with EarSwitch, for Monday 24th March 2025 if you are interested in discussing the design of a new standard of data infrastructure for reliable and multi-physiological digital twins. This data will be useful for clinical trials/ CROs/ Pharma/ medical research and the future of integration into EHR/ NHS & personal digital twins. If you are a user of this data we would love to see you to incorporate your needs. Here is the Webinar recording for “The Future of #EarMetrics Digital Twin in Partnership with IBM” held last Monday 3rd March 2025; an introduction prior to the workshop. (If I have already reached out to you and you havent heard before the event please do nudge me) https://lnkd.in/ebAwuc9f

Zero Project and The Scott-Morgan Foundation have provided the most amazing global platform for EarSwitch to promote accessibility and handsfree control for all from consumer earbuds. Imagine you could skip a track, answer the phone or start your headcam with a “Click of an ear”…… imagine now that the same technology could unlock communication for someone with Motor Neurone Disease/ ALS, Locked-in-Syndrome or severe cerebral palsy. How about giving someone who’s paralysed from a neck injury the ability to type their emails and control their surroundings. That’s my dream… that all smart earphones and hearing aids come empowered by EarSwitch and handsfree #EarControl; giving control to all. Apple Microsoft Google Lenovo NVIDIA it was great to meet you all. Let’s work together!

The University of Bath are developing a new ear-based assistive device to help people communicate - and they need your help! Do you require assistive technology? This includes using a communication aid and/or technology to assist with feeding, mobility, or controlling your environment. Can you make a rumbling sound with your ear? Or can you squeeze a muscle in your ear to muffle your hearing? The study will be run in your own home, with the device delivered to you to use over a 4-week period. If you are interested, please email earswitch@ bath.ac.uk University of Bath

#EarMetrics Oximeter - targetting the racially equitable central / core site of the non-pigmented inner ear- canal. Also - we’re making people aware that the current FDA guidance allows oximeters to pass with 3% root MEAN square error. Which doesn’t seem adequate when SpO2 is being used as a threshold decision maker eg in UK for COVID treatment cut off SpO2 >92%. This can be on ONLY 10 healthy volunteers and TOTAL 200 data points- during controlled desats trials. 3% MEAN error; FDA quotes that -only 66% of readings will be within +/- 3% from true SaO2 value. - 95% of readings will be within +/- 6% So 1:20 readings could be >6% inaccurate. I could not believe this when I first found out as a clinician with 30yrs experience and having relied on these devices for the last 15yrs. So we are hoping to provide a better core/ central measure with higher accuracy that works independent of skin colour EarSwitch

Wristbands and smartwatches have made health tracking more accessible, but when it comes to accurate vital sign detection, they often fall short. A 2020 study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that variations in the accuracy of similar devices across skin tone, notably 🟢 11.7% of pulse oximeter readings in Black patients were inaccurate... 🟢 ...compared to 3.6% in White patients. These reasons for these inaccuracies stem from the means by which pulse oximeters use light to estimate oxygen levels in the blood. The device shines light through the skin and measures the proportion of light absorbed by the blood. This is the same method used in most wearables (PPG). Darker skin tones absorb more light, which can distort the reading, often leading to overestimated oxygen levels. This issue underscores the limitations of optical sensors in accurately detecting vital signs for individuals with darker skin tones. So, what’s next? The answer lies in exploring alternatives that directly address these challenges. In-ear monitoring, for example, leverages the stability of the ear canal aiming to deliver more consistent, accurate readings, offering the possibility of a reliable and inclusive solution for monitoring vital signs. Healthcare innovation is about solving real-world problems. We're aiming to build solutions that could work for everyone — delivering precise, continuous health insights that empower better outcomes, regardless of skin colour.
