Colombia, the host of the #COP16 biodiversity summit, is the 4th largest coffee producer in the world. By 2050, a projected 2.7°C temperature increase is likely to reduce the suitable land for Arabica coffee in Colombia by 16%. Earth Security's latest investment research is out, just in time for this week's #COP16. See how Colombia compares to other coffee producers on coffee-driven deforestation and climate risk. And which financing tools can deliver the much-needed catalytic capital to finance the transition of coffee towards climate resilience. Great to see that Earth Security's work with British International Investment and Zephyr Power Limited has been recognised by the High-Level Climate Champions in their new report on nature-positive climate action. Released back in 2020, it was our first practical example for how companies could see #nature reflected on their #balancesheet and has helped to shape the space of mangrove finance. Since then, we have added a whole new series of business and financing models through our ongoing work with companies and investors across emerging markets, supporting investments in nature as an asset.

Just launched: 'Nature Positive for Climate Action'—a crucial report that shows we cannot achieve our climate goals without nature. Over 450 businesses and financial institutions are implementing nature positive for climate action. This collection of 28 case studies brings to life real-world applications of nature-based solutions contributing to cut emissions by 50% by 2030. Our work in Colombia is expanding the investment theme for nature as 'critical infrastructure', with an investment pipeline that enables investors to support the highland forests that provide water to Colombia's largest cities below. Drawing on Earth Security's earlier research on the idea of cloud forests as infrastructure assets, we partnered with Bogotá Water Fund (Agua Somos) – a multi-stakeholder water fund at the forefront of Colombia's watershed governance and science-based conservation programmes to create a pipeline of investment opportunities that make the water ecosystem services of forests tangible for investors. Over the past year, we have been: • Translating our research on cloud forests into action, creating new investment opportunities that support high-altitude Andrean páramo ecosystems as vital water infrastructure to the city of Bogotá. • Aggregating a pipeline of investment opportunities for private capital to invest in regenerative businesses that are restoring and regenerating the Bogotá River basin and showing the potential for replication across over 40 water basins worldwide. • Supporting the development of investment projects, from biodiversity credits to tourism and jurisdictional carbon schemes that are both profitable opportunities and can drive impact on ecosystem services at a basin-wide scale. Alejandro Litovsky, Founder and CEO of Earth Security, said: "We are expanding Earth Security's playbook of natural asset investments as infrastructure. Quite literally, forests are increasing the water resilience of cities and companies that face unprecedented levels of water risk. This is supporting the COP16 Biodiversity Summit in Colombia's critical task of providing a pathway of global investors to get more exposure to valuable natural assets." The global demand for coffee is on track to triple by 2050 as as it expands rapidly across Asian markets. Earth Security’s new report, launched today for #InternationalCoffeeDay, anticipates the impact that climate change will have on the global sector, with up to 50% of suitable coffee lands shrinking by 2050. The volatility expected in coffee markets as the result of a climate-induced supply shortage and a rapidly growing demand, create a powerful business case change. Our report provides global coffee companies, investors and strategic philanthropists, with a blueprint to invest in the transition to nature-positive coffee production – methods proven to shield crops from higher temperatures, raise the incomes of farmers and drive business value while restoring biodiversity. Our report finds that: • Only 20% of global companies dominating the global coffee market have created regenerative coffee sourcing targets for their value chains. • The top 5 coffee-exporting countries will see some of the largest climate impacts in terms of coffee land constraints and livelihoods. • New models of blended finance delivered in coordination with global companies are needed to enable the transition farmers and value chains to regenerative coffee at a greater scale.  • A playbook of innovative finance solutions – from supply chain finance to carbon offsetting – provides a menu of options to support industry-wide collaboration. Download the report to learn how we can secure the future of coffee through climate and nature investments: https://lnkd.in/eaCg8Kk7 #ClimateResilience #RegenerativeAgriculture #SustainableCoffee #CarbonCredits #SupplyChainInnovation #EarthSecurity

Last week, Earth Security convened Indonesian companies, government agencies, NGOs, and project developers, to discuss how catalytic finance can accelerate the pace and scale of mangrove conservation and restoration in Indonesia. Our workshop was co-convened with the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KADIN). It reflected our growing collaboration with government agencies such as the Indonesian Environment Fund (#BPHDLH), and a network of NGOs and project developers. Five key takeaways: (1) Blended finance: There is an opportunity for mangrove finance in Indonesia to leverage a range of instruments currently being used by the government to help de-risk projects. (2) Blue carbon and communities: Indonesia's carbon market is rapidly developing and is set to open the floodgates of project funding. This should increase the scrutiny on the quality of community engagement and the use of science-backed methods, as two factors critically linked to successful projects. (3) Pools of expertise: There is an extensive pool of knowledge and expertise on mangrove restoration across NGOs and scientific organizations. Often times these bring complementary knowledge and regionally-specific expertise. Coordination can improve how this expertise is applied across Indonesian regions. (4) The private sector: Our pilots in Indonesia show the potential for Indonesian companies to provide early-stage catalytic funding. Projects can deliver maximum business value when aligned with corporate climate strategies. (5) The demand for an investment platform: The workshop revealed significant interest from organizations to coordinate private and public catalytic capital more efficiently and effectively to support projects across Indonesia. At Earth Security, we are using these workshops and the network as key inputs to build an investment platform that will help accelerate catalytic and blended capital to unlock a pipeline of high-quality, high-impact projects. The workshop also launched our latest report: The Business Case for Mangroves in Indonesia. Thrilled to see the Earth Security team growing our partnership with the TWA Angke Kapuk project in Jakarta. We have mobilised funding to TWA from investors that restored mangroves protecting North Jakarta’s infrastructure, with 90% survival rate. We are now developing a series of catalytic investment options for more investors to grow with the future success of TWA’s amazing urban mangrove park in Indonesia’s capital. Today, we're launching in Jakarta a new report by Earth Security outlining the business case for mangrove conservation and restoration in Indonesia. This report, 'The Business Case for Mangroves in Indonesia: A Natural Asset for Net-Zero and Coastal Resilience', outlines the value of mangroves to Indonesian companies through a series of case studies based on Earth Security's work, portfolio of projects and development of an ambitious funding platform in the region. In it, we explore through our pilots how this natural asset can be leveraged by Indonesian companies. We chart its future relevance in the emergence of Indonesia's carbon market, and outline the role that the Indonesian private sector can play in contributing to the Indonesian government's climate goals. Read the guide here: https://lnkd.in/e2fuDYNM We are grateful for the partnership and support from UBS Optimus Foundation, Djarum Foundation, and Good Energies Foundation. #Indonesia #bluecarbon #naturebasedsolutions #mangroves

As part of our partnership with the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KADIN), we are proud to have supported the celebration of Indonesia's 79th Independence Day with a mangrove planting initiative with Indonesian businesses. 🇮🇩 Last week, our Senior Partnership Manager, Heru Prama Yuda, represented Earth Security to help plant 1,500 mangrove seedlings in Pabean Ilir, West Java, Indonesia. This TERA Program (Take Environmental Regenerative Action), initiated by the Mandiri Hijau Lestari Foundation and supported by KADIN, brought together a coalition of partners, including Earth Security, CarbonEthics, PT TRIPUTRA AGRO PERSADA GROUP, Cirebon Power, Badan Pangan Nasional, and Earth Pledge. The funds raised through this partnership will also support local communities to develop integrated mangrove-aquaculture projects and ecotourism. 🔗 Find out more about our M40 mangrove program here: https://lnkd.in/eM5_-WKM #ClimateAction #MangroveRestoration #Indonesia #SustainableDevelopment #Ecotourism #Silvofishery #TERA #Kadin
