About us

East Devon District Council serves a population of 132,900 spread across 314 square miles. It sits between the River Exe and outskirts of Exeter to the west, Somerset (inland) and Dorset to the east. At the extremes, the District stretches 30 miles east to west and 15 miles north to south. Our coastline forms part of England’s first and only World Heritage site designated for its natural environment. The East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty lies wholly within the District, together with the greater part of the Blackdown Hills AONB. Our main towns are the coastal resorts of Exmouth (Devon’s largest town – pop. 34,000); Budleigh Salterton, Cranbrook Sidmouth and Seaton. In the mainly rural inland area the settlements are Honiton, Ottery St Mary, Axminster and Broadclyst. Our ambition is to keep East Devon an outstanding place. Our priorities that will help us do this are: • encouraging communities to be outstanding • developing an outstanding local economy • delivering and promoting our outstanding environment • continuously improving to be an outstanding council We have also been awarded Investors in People Platinum for our commitment to developing our staff.

  • A project designed to combat food insecurity among low-income households in East Devon has supported 50 local people, helping them build confidence and skills to become healthy, self-assured cooks. The council-backed project delivered: 🍳 Hands-on cooking sessions – including group workshops in Sidmouth and Cranbrook, as well as one-to-one support in Honiton. 🥕 Free recipe boxes – some of which were part funded by Sidmouth Foodbank, containing ingredients and recipes for families to recreate the meals at home, ensuring the learning extended beyond the sessions. 😃 Community engagement – working closely with schools, food banks and mental health services, the project reached 19 adults and 31 children, offering practical support. • Launched today, the new National Coastal Erosion Risk Map provides the most up to date national picture of coastal erosion risk for England now and in the future. It was produced by the Environment Agency in collaboration with local authorities who supplied local data and verified the outputs. The new NCERM: * makes erosion information more accessible and understandable * includes the impacts of climate change * provides new information on coastal land instability caused by rainfall and rising groundwater levels, which can contribute to cliff erosion and landslides * uses improved methodologies, latest coastal monitoring data, and new research on erosion and rising sea levels #climatechange #clifferosion #landslides #coastalerosion https://lnkd.in/eiMZNini

  • This week, Coly Valley ward councillors joined council colleagues and partners to celebrate work getting underway on six new #affordable homes which are being built in #Northleigh. The scheme has been made possible thanks to funding from Homes England, East Devon District Council and Teign Housing. Over the years, Upper Coly Valley Community Land Trust received grant funding to pay for the design and associated works to obtain planning permission, and the land was originally sold to Teign Housing by the local parish council. Councillor Paul Arnott, Leader of East Devon District Council, said: “I am proud to support this important milestone, as construction begins on a much-needed development of affordable homes, and we work in partnership with Teign Housing to address the demand for affordable housing in our rural areas. It is essential that local families can access good quality, affordable housing, to enable them to live safely and comfortably in the communities they know and love. I hope this development will provide a sustainable and affordable housing solution that will benefit the area for years to come.” The homes will be available to bid via Devon Home Choice a few weeks prior to completion. Residents are expected to move into their homes in early 2026. More here ➡️ https://lnkd.in/exNFtzDi
