✨ We hope everyone who celebrated had a safe and memorable Bonfire Night! While many enjoyed the festivities, our dedicated ambulance crews were out responding to those who needed us. 🚑 Faye and Lauren, on duty from Ashbourne Station, captured this stunning photo of a firework lighting up the night sky - a moment of beauty during their busy evening shift. 🌌✨ Thank you to all our teams for their hard work and to everyone who celebrated responsibly. 🎇

About us
East Midlands Ambulance Service NHS Trust (EMAS) provides emergency 999, urgent care services for the 4.8 million people within Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Rutland, Lincolnshire (including North and North East Lincolnshire), Northamptonshire and Nottinghamshire. We also provide Patient Transport Services for Derbyshire patients with routine hospital or clinical appointments. We employ more than 3,290 staff across over 70 locations, including two Emergency Operations Centres at Nottingham and Lincoln. Our largest staff group is made up of our accident and emergency 999 crews and we operate a fleet of around 555 vehicles, including emergency ambulances, fast response cars, specialised vehicles and patient transport vehicles. Every day we receive around 2,500 calls from members of the public who have called 999 – this is the equivalent of receiving an emergency call every 34 seconds. Our Community Paramedics and Emergency Care Practitioners have enhanced skills, meaning that more and more people can be treated in their own homes if a hospital visit is not required. We are continuously delivering improvements in the treatment of patients, use of technology and opportunities for staff as we move forward to provide high-quality care and to build on the significant advances made in recent years.

Today is World Mental Health Day, a moment to reflect on the importance of wellbeing in and out of work. We're committed to providing our staff with support and we would like to remind our colleagues that details of all the support networks available to them can be found in Enews and Insite. We're proud to share a powerful poem written by our Student Paramedic Laura Gorman. Laura, who started at EMAS in 2018, has been writing poetry since she was about 17 years old as she finds it helps with her mental wellbeing. She has two books published, 'Mental scars you cannot see' and 'Mental scars brought to life'. 'Behind the Uniform' by Laura Gorman Know behind the uniform in which we wear, Is someone who joined the job because we care, For the times you call us in the middle of the night, Because your loved one has given up the fight. Most people will never be able to understand, What it's like to sit with those dying, as you hold their hand, And when we are finished, we go to the next call, As if what just happened never happened at all. We’ll walk into strangers’ homes like we’ve been there before, Without knowing what’s before us or what’s behind the door, We’ll be there for you every day of the year, Even on the days, we can’t be with those we hold dear. Screams we remember after telling you your loved one has died, When we close our eyes, we still see you laying by their side, The uniform does not protect us from the things we observe, But when we’re with you, our own emotions we’ll reserve. We don’t do it for the thanks or certainly not for the pay, We do it to help strangers loved ones stay another day, And when a heart stops beating and we’re too late, Know it breaks us, and we carry that weight. Know behind the uniform, we’re just like you, Trying to navigate our lives and make it through, When you see us at the end of the day, as we sit there and cry, Know we gave our all and our very best we did try.

Last week we attended the National Ambulance Memorial Service in the beautiful grounds of the National Memorial Arboretum, to remember staff colleagues, and volunteers we've lost. Director of Human Resources and Organisational Development, Kerry Gulliver, lit a memorial candle during the service, before colleagues laid a wreath at the memorial in the garden. We were represented in the procession by standard-bearer Keith Sharpe.

On Thursday 12 September, 13-year-old Brooke Clements from Beeston, Nottinghamshire, received the EMAS Children’s Bravery Award for her heroic actions in calling 999 for an ambulance when her dad had an epileptic seizure. Her father, Kieron Clements, who has lived with epilepsy for many years, credits Brooke and her sisters Layla (12) and Robyn (11) for their ongoing support during his seizures. On the day of Kieron’s emergency on 8 May 2024, Brooke calmly called 999 and provided vital information to Emergency Medical Advisor Sophie Littlefair, ensuring her father received prompt medical assistance. The crew on scene, Paramedic Jonathan Burlace and Emergency Care Assistant Lisa Doyle, also praised Brooke’s calmness and maturity. Brooke also shared advice for children in similar situations, encouraging them to remain calm and follow instructions when calling for emergency help. You can read more about Brooke and Kieron’s story on our website:
