Teachers unprepared for AI education A new report from the Center on Reinventing Public Education (CRPE) reveals that U.S. teacher training programs are struggling to keep pace with the rapid advancements in artificial intelligence (AI), leaving future K-12 educators unprepared for AI-integrated classrooms. The survey of over 500 education schools found that only 25% of institutions incorporate AI into teacher training, with most focusing narrowly on plagiarism prevention rather than AI's broader educational potential. Faculty resistance and a lack of confidence in using AI were cited as major barriers to progress. While some institutions, like Arizona State University and the University of Northern Iowad, are making strides, most programs are falling behind in equipping teachers with AI literacy and ethics training. The report calls for systemic investments in AI education and urges policymakers to revise teacher certification standards to include AI competencies. It also highlights the need for alternative training methods, such as micro-credentialing, to help preservice teachers stay ahead of the curve. A new path to algebra success The importance of passing Algebra 1 in 9th grade is underscored by a new study from Stanford University, which reveals that students who would typically be placed in remedial math can succeed in Algebra 1 with the right support. The research, led by Thomas Dee and Elizabeth Huffaker, examined a de-tracking initiative in a California district that combined below-grade-level and on-grade-level students in the same classes, providing teachers with intensive training. The results showed that struggling students in these mixed classes were more likely to pass higher-level math courses and performed better on 11th grade tests compared to their peers in remedial tracks. Dee emphasized the significance of “attending to the instructional core,” highlighting the role of professional development in achieving these outcomes. However, challenges remain, as many students still struggled and had to retake Algebra 1, raising questions about the scalability of such initiatives in different districts. Teens struggle with media literacy Recent findings reveal that teenagers struggle to discern accurate information in today's chaotic digital landscape. Peter Adams, senior vice-president of research and design at The News Literacy Project, noted that conspiracy theories appeal to many because they provide “simple explanations for complex, incomprehensible events.” A survey of 1,110 teens aged 13 to 18 found that 94% desire media literacy instruction in schools, with 57% believing it should be mandatory. However, only three states require such education. Many teens fail to identify branded content and often trust misleading sources over professional journalism. As Adams stated, teens are “inheriting the largest, most complex, most frenetic information environment in human history.” To combat this, educators are implementing strategies like lateral reading and reverse image searches to help students navigate the digital world more effectively. Teachers feel undervalued, report shows According to EdWeek's 2024 State of Teaching report, 70% of teachers believe the public views their profession negatively. This perception can impact teachers' job satisfaction and performance, ultimately affecting the quality of education. A North Dakota middle school teacher said: “Teachers are overworked, underpaid, and disrespected.” The survey, conducted with 1,498 teachers in October 2023, highlights challenges such as increased workloads and political pressures. Matthew A. Kraft, a professor at Brown University, noted that the public's limited perspective on teaching contributes to this negative perception. He stated, “When people rate the quality of public schools broadly, they give schools middling grades.” Kraft advocates for a shift in focus towards attracting highly qualified individuals to the teaching profession, emphasizing the need for structural changes, including better pay and redefining teaching roles. Engaging teachers key to effective curriculum changes for reading success As districts nationwide overhaul their curricula to embrace the science of reading, experts Evan Stone and Eric Hirsch argue that curriculum changes alone won’t solve the reading crisis. Despite evidence showing the benefits of teacher involvement and curriculum-aligned professional learning, few teachers have had input in the selection process or received adequate professional development. Data from Educators for Excellence reveals gaps in implementation, with only one in four teachers saying their district is effectively supporting them. Stone and Hirsch urge districts to include educators in curriculum decisions and invest in long-term professional learning to improve student literacy, noting that practical application and teacher engagement are critical for successful implementation. Teachers turn to AI for recommendations Approximately one-third of high school teachers have utilized artificial intelligence (AI) tools to assist in writing recommendation letters, according to a recent report by foundry10. The report highlights that nearly 40% of teachers write over 10 letters annually, with some dedicating more than 30 hours to the task. Melissa Millington, a high school counselor, stated: “I've used it to start a template for recommendation letters... I think it's really helpful.” While half of the teachers using AI found it reduced stress, many others expressed concerns about the personal touch and ethics of AI-generated content. Jennifer Rubin, a senior researcher at foundry10, noted that the impact of AI on students' college admissions remains uncertain, emphasizing the importance of personalization in recommendation letters. Teachers believe using AI for routine tasks is acceptable, contrasting with students using AI for their essays, as they are still developing their writing skills.
