🙂 A reason to smile! The newly released Encyclopedia of Happiness from Constructor University sheds new light on our collective wellbeing. The Encyclopedia of #Happiness, Quality of Life and Subjective #Wellbeing (EoH) compiles the latest findings in the field with contributions from over 100 scholars, including all six editors of the United Nations' World Happiness Report. “By focusing on new research in the field, the EoH is designed to encapsulate all of the knowledge we have on the subject, so that we can further inform our policy decisions moving forward,” says Hilke Brockmann, Professor of Sociology at Constructor University and co-editor of the EoH. Furthermore, by incorporating a diverse range of international and interdisciplinary views, it provides a unique, systematic outlook for research in the future. Organized into five sections, the EoH is a representative artefact of foundational concepts, determinants of happiness, cultural differences in happiness, trending and emerging topics, and also takes a closer look at data, methods and measures. The Encyclopedia of Happiness was co-edited by Roger Fernandez-Urbano, PhD, MRes, MSc, MA and post-doctoral fellow at the Paris School of Economics, and Hilke Brockmann, Professor of #Sociology at Constructor University in Bremen. It is published by Edward Elgar Publishing and is available as both a hardback (€214) and eBook (€48). Consultant and author on leadership, organisational development and organisational change

Thank you so much to Edward Elgar Publishing for their support and generosity with this. On the Elgar website, the discount code is TOMK20 (UK) or TOMKUS (US). I have just ran into a book that is a great complement to "Leadership as Masterpiece Creation." It’s "Franz Kafka and the Truths of Leadership" by Leah Tomkins (pictured nearby). The book offers a master class in how to bring literary and philosophical insights to understand leadership. Her scholarship is impressive. She has read in German the original manuscripts of Kafka’s works in the Bodleian library. The translations are her own. Tomkins also has wide knowledge of organizational studies thinking on leadership, and she is an impressive Foucault scholar. She certainly gets what other casual Foucault scholars miss: resisting power is the job of the leader as much or more than it is the job of others. Why Kafka on leadership? Though Kafka scholars have known it for some time, Tomkins points out that Kafka himself was a senior manager at the Workman’s Accident Insurance Institute and temporarily the acting CEO. Kafka was a business leader as well as a writer, knew leadership firsthand, and represents organizations and organizational leadership in his stories. What makes Tomkins’s book so good is that her intellect and writing are so sharp that this book is a page turner. It even has a bit of the literary about it in that, as one reads, one tends to think that Kafka’s and Tomkins’s thoughts and voices are the same, and then, every once in a while, they come apart in a burst of light. The book discloses the subtle truths of leadership and does so with an artist’s flair. I recommend purchasing the book. The critical side of Tomkins’s book follows my experience. Because of social complexity, authentic leadership requires an impossible purity. Because of the need for recognition, caring and relationship leadership turn into master-slave games. Embodied leadership produces docile bodies. Transformational leadership untruthfully hides the luck required for transformational success and therefore turns these leaders into con artists. Collective leadership creates leaders who are average and bring that to their organization. She draws on Foucault’s technologies of the self to advise leaders how to create a space where others follow. Following Foucault’s logic, if you gain mastery over yourself, others will admire you, follow you, and learn from you. My favorite technology of the self is Foucault’s parrhesia, telling truth to power. Tomkins extends that to include questioning yourself and acknowledging conflicting dispositions and thereby living in the light that shines from managing the difference. She does not say so, but she ends up where I am. Leadership is artistry.

‘We live in a world where more than a quarter of countries are led by dictators and a substantial portion of leaders in business and government are destructive. While we know a lot about good leaders, there has been little attention given to studying the bad ones. This edited collection presents state-of-the-art research on destructive leadership and includes directions for future research. This book shines a bright light on the dark side of leadership and greatly helps our understanding of the dynamics of destructive leadership.’ – Ronald E. Riggio, Claremont McKenna College, US In this Research Handbook, Birgit Schyns NEOMA Business School, Pedro Neves Nova School of Business and Economics, and Kimberley Breevaart Erasmus University Rotterdam bring together expert contributing authors to lay out a state-of-the-art overview of destructive leadership and explore how this can cause harm to individuals, teams, organizations, and even societies. Elated. The book is done. 10 years in the making 📕🕰 Enormous thanks to the amazing team at Edward Elgar Publishing for helping me bring my vision to life. If the title didn't give it away, this book explores the consideration doctrine in contract law. It's always fascinated me, and there is (as far as I know) no title that examines it and its nuances in this level of detail. Consideration is what you give one another and how you do so. The cover is symbolic - contracts are about exchange, and exchange is the essence of life. Birds pollinate flowers in return for the nectar they gather 🐦🌻 Also law book covers bore me so I wanted something different. Some of the questions I answer in my work: 🔵 How does the law value things that we exchange? 🔵 Why do people buy multimillion dollar mansions or football clubs for $1? 🔵 What makes a promise, bet, or other agreement contractual and enforceable? 🔵 Do love, cryptocurrency, good luck charms and virtual property have legal value? 🔵 How does contract renegotiation work? 🔵 What do Elvis, Tabasco sauce, ghosts, Shakespeare, and Homer Simpson have to do with contract law? If you're after a copy, you can grab one here: https://lnkd.in/g3tHiiSD. There's also an eBook version (you can read Chapter 1 for free!): https://lnkd.in/g4dWpd-q. Special thanks to my family and friends, my incredible colleagues at the Adelaide Law School and around the world (particularly Professor Andrew Stewart and Associate Professor John Gava, who inspired this work), my amazing RA Michael Croft, and the entire EE team, especially Fiona Todd, Luke Adams, Sabrina Zaher, Caroline Phillips, and Katelin Bennett. Also please forgive my jet-lagged appearance!
