My colleague Ionela Spinu and I are in the San Francisco Bay area this week scoping a leadership experience Emerging World have been asked to deliver in early December. It’s my first time back in the city since 2019 and it’s been great to catch up with some old friends and colleagues. Thank you Lisa K. & Maeven M.. San Francisco is a fascinating (and photogenic) city. It tells a rich and diverse story. Early European explorers originally found the Bay a safe haven for ships and it’s still a big location for importing and exporting with a thriving harbour. The gold rush of 1849 really put the city on the map and though the currency may have changed, people still flock here to search for their fortune but now it’s the tech industry that holds the promise of riches rather than gold mines. It’s also a city that has promoted inclusion. Liberal attitudes have enabled diverse communities to feel they belong – from people with diverse SOGIE (Sexual Orientation and Gender Expression) to the hippies of the 1960’s and many communities from across the Pacific and Latin America who have made the area their home. These attitudes are not without the drawbacks. Sympathetic local government policy has helped to make the city attractive to the homeless in such numbers that local people’s tolerance is being tested due to the associated issues homelessness brings, particularly around drug use. Rents have skyrocketed pricing local people out of homes and adding fuel to the problem while the structural inequalities experienced by marginalised and historically excluded communities are still apparent. But the city has resilience. Earthquakes may have razed many buildings over the years but the sprit of the city and its people live on. I can’t wait to find out what the week will bring and what stories we can bring into our learning experience in a few weeks’ time.

I’ve just returned from an inspiring week in Hyderabad with Michelle M. McBride, MSOD, Suzanne Coonan MS, PCC, Ravneet Jandu and the Salesforce senior executive development team. It was a transformational experience that engaged senior executives at Salesforce in tackling priority issues the company is facing as part of their development. We used an immersive learning approach through which participants: 🤝 Built strong relationships with each other – there is nothing like being together in-person in a vibrant location away from home for creating the conditions in which relationships and connection flourish ⏩ Worked collaboratively to move forward complex business challenges that need to be addressed to keep the company thriving 👓 Broadened perspective through a range of immersive activities such as visits to local schools supported by social entrepreneurs, engagements with inspirational people demonstrating leadership every day and paired conversations with local talent that provide the inside track on change 🛠 Embraced approaches like Action Learning and Adaptive Leadership that provide practical new ways to understand and tackle problems 📚 Shared personal life stories and how these influence leadership choices The impact was palpable. To be witness to the discussion and energy on the final day was a true privilege Thank you Salesforce for our enduring partnership over the past 7 years and huge thanks to our amazing Emerging World team of Amanda Bowman, Ionela Spinu, Amy Moore (ICF MCC) & Ed Williams. You all demonstrated the #adaptability that’s required to deliver such powerful leadership experiences in the current context, as well as bringing your many diverse talents and incredible teamwork to our efforts. I am truly fortunate to work with such great people. Thank you also to Carl Sanders-Edwards for your words of wisdom as well as our amazing partners Subbu Parameswaran, PMP of Learning Curve , Eshwar Bandi of Inqui-Lab Foundation, yuva kanagasabapathy & Madhavi of Chotuu Ki Education, Nayantara Janardhan of EnAble India, and the teams from 1M1B (1 Million for 1 Billion) & Teach For India for helping bring this experience alive. You deserve huge recognition for the great work you are doing.

Throwback to last week volunteering in the Andorran Pyrenees as part of the Unit4 Act4Good Anniversary Experience with our partner Emerging World, an initiative created to celebrate important work anniversary milestones, while also giving something back. Together with 9 other colleagues we spent the week engaging in hands-on volunteering and hiking across various remote research sites to help the local researchers track climate change effects on the Alpine environments. As part of the expedition we engaged in various activities such as measuring tree growth, removing old and planting new tea bags for soil decomposition research, checking bird boxes, tagging and measuring small mammals and removing wildlife cameras for further inspection. Anyone looking for a different type of volunteering experience I would definitely recommend checking out the Earthwatch Institute website as they host a wide variety of volunteering expeditions such as this one. Happy work anniversary to us, and thank you Unit4 for this amazing experience! 🎉 😊 Thank you for the company and memories! The Emerging World team is out and about, connecting with our incredible clients across the globe! 🌏 Here, our Managing Director, Matthew Farmer shares his reflections on a recent trip to Hyderabad, India, where he gained fresh insights into the dynamic local landscape. We're thrilled to be facilitating an immersive leadership development experience in this vibrant city soon, fostering growth and impact in an inspiring setting! 💫 #LeadershipDevelopment #GlobalImpact #ImmersiveExperiences #Hyderabad

Last month I had the opportunity to travel to Hyderabad in India in connection with a leadership development experience Emerging World will be delivering there soon. It was my first visit to India since the pandemic and my first to Hyderabad for over 15 years. Experiences like this are thought provoking and this was no exception. Here are a few of my reflections: 💡 1️⃣ The pace of development in India is visceral (yet still two tiered). On the map my hotel would have been in the countryside had I stayed there 15 years back. Right now however, it sits in the middle of a metropolis of high rises known locally as 'Cyberabad' 🌆 , each decorated by the logos of the milieu of global corporations with offices in the city. Yet when you look past the glass facades, there are still plenty of informal settlements with dwellings covered by tarpaulins. Beggars still swarm vehicles that are waiting at road junctions🚦 ; and there is evidence everywhere of efforts to slow down rural to urban migration and provide a better life in the village . 2️⃣ The value of being able to travel 🚐 in advance to locations where we will be holding a transformational leadership experience is huge. Not only were we able to get a sense of the place and make informed decisions about what elements of the local context we wish to incorporate into the experience, but we could also build relationships of trust with those we met and those we travelled with, enabling us to design more effectively as a result. 3️⃣ Our visit reminded me that getting injured or sick 🤕 when you're far from home leaves you uniquely vulnerable. You really come to appreciate the kindness of strangers and the need to trust. 4️⃣ The reputation the city has for enjoying spicy food 🌶 has not diminished. But it's not just non-Indians that can find that challenging. Locals from other states can also find the basic levels of heat in the food too much at times. 5️⃣ We were all inspired 🙏 by the amazing and important work being done by local people who were exercising true leadership in service of tackling the issues that matter most. Thank you Yuva & Madhari at Chotuu Ki Education, Subbu Parameswaran, PMP & Gayatri Natarajan of Learning Curve , Manav Subodh & Abhiram Natarajan of 1M1B (1 Million for 1 Billion), Eshwar Bandi & Sahithya Anumolu of Inqui-Lab Foundation and the many others who energized us during our visit. Thank you also to Michelle M. McBride, MSOD, Ashish Bhuwania (he/him) and Amanda Bowman for the being the best travelling companions. I can't wait to put all of this ground work into action!

One thing we value at Emerging World is #ContinuousLearning. We are curious learners. This curiosity drives our innovation, our continuous improvement and keeps our passion constant. It's what we seek to bring into the work that we do for our clients and the participants in our programs -- to embrace new perspectives, challenge our own assumptions, and consider ways to do things differently in our efforts to shape a better world. How do you stay curious in the work that you do? What are you learning that's helping you improve? #StayCurious #NorthStar #ShapeABetterFuture #EWat20

"...being exposed to different challenges in different fields of life, trying to make sense of them, identify the real issue and work a way forward is a wonderful way to develop as a leader" says our Managing Director, Matthew Farmer. Our leadership development experiences at Emerging World really work to help leaders effectively diagnose and navigate the complex challenges they often face. Take a look at Matthew's further comments below on the #AdaptiveLeadership Framework and its significance for effective leadership.

Last month I had the opportunity to join the Art & Practice of Leadership Development course at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard facilitated by Ron Heifetz, Tim O'Brien and Farayi Chipungu. It was a profound experience that used an adaptive leadership framework to help our fabulous and diverse group of 64 leadership development practitioners from around the world to develop our understanding of leadership and how to best develop it in others. I was somewhat familiar with the adaptive leadership framework from other work I have been doing over the past 5 years or so. However participating in this experience has solidified some fundamentals and I have emerged with a conviction that this framing of leadership makes a huge amount of sense in the world in which we operate.  It also helped me to appreciate and articulate the value of the work my company does while providing us with a set of additional tools that will help participants in the leadership development experiences that my company provides to be able to take their learning and apply it to the challenges that they face as ‘leaders’ in their own organizations and communities. Over the coming weeks, I’m going to share a few of the most salient points. We’ll begin here. Leadership is a word used widely but is understood to be many different things by many different people. The problem with this is that it is hard to research, teach and learn when there is so little common understanding of what leadership actually is. The definition of leadership as ‘a practice of mobilizing resources to make progress on adaptive (or complex) challenges’ is compelling to me and aligns closely with my own experience of leadership and the work that we do at Emerging World. Most leadership failures are a result of an incorrect diagnosis of the adaptive challenges that are being worked on and treating them as technical problems. Therefore, the place where those exercising leadership can make most progress in improving their capacity or capability to lead effectively, is by honing their diagnostic skills. In this regard being exposed to different challenges in different fields of life, trying to make sense of them, identify the real issue and work a way forward is a wonderful way to develop as a leader. Anyone who has experienced one of our immersive leadership experiences at Emerging World will recognize this approach and it helps to make sense of why they are such powerful and valued learning experiences. #leadershipdevelopment #immersivelearning
