Can potential malintent from one or more persons be spotted from a distance from just their behaviour? EmotionIntell have developed and tested the #OTER and #iALERT #primarydetection system to help you just do that. #OTER is an acronym for EIA’s methodology and stands for Observe, Target, Engage, and Respond. It is used as a top-level filtering system, in any environment where security professionals are challenged with monitoring high volumes of individuals in a high-security environment, such as airports, train stations, close/diplomatic protection in urban areas, event security, festivals, shopping malls, and so on. So what are these specific research-based indicators that someone is planning a future attack on you, or those you care about? Or even about to make a move right now? Explore OTER and how iALERT works here. 👇🏼 #scans #scanr #behavioranalysis #behaviouranalysis #wmotionalintelligence #threatdetection #counterterrorism #police #stopandsearch

In 2010 when EIA launched the MSc in Behaviour Analysis/Emotional Intelligence we were asked by potential delegates, “Is there such a job as a #BehaviourAnalyst apart from what you guys, Paul Ekman, David Matsumoto and Cal Lightman do?” At the time there wasn’t, so professionals joined our courses largely on faith and support of our vision to bring science to the field - it was too heavily contaminated with ‘X=Y’ myths and folklore. We knew it needed work to be treated seriously - rather than a ‘soft-skill’. So we embarked on 10 years of intensive research and development. There are now hundreds of #SCAnS coders/trainers and #MSc graduates who are creating an industry to help high-stake clients across the globe, in 9 languages, to #gettothetruth Damir Zolota is a great example. 🙌 Please join Damir, us and others to help service the growing demand for #emotionalintelligence #behavioranalysis #behaviouranalysis coaching/training/consultancy. https://lnkd.in/em28TqP2 https://lnkd.in/gtteqD2C https://lnkd.in/eEkMNvfk

Cops, Soldiers and Spies: who are the best lie detectors? Before our training there isn’t much of a difference. Same with HR, trainers, coaches and other business folk. They all average around 54% - no better than chance from our experience working with them across 5 Continents. See also 2006 research: https://lnkd.in/ejqaNSk7 However we have found Cops learn the best. Nearly all sectors admit on day one of our standard 3-day SCAnR #truthdetection training (see link) that they aren’t taught #behaviouranalysis in their careers and they rate themselves at around 5/10. Exercises on day one confirms this. By day 3 they average 85-90% on the post-tests, some hit 100%. Especially those who continue on our MSc. My general theory on Cops is that they are generally better (post-training) as they have ‘professional curiosity’ reinforced into their investigative training - often a trait that led them to join the Force in the first place. I find they don’t jump as quickly to judgement as spies, HR professionals, etc., Many aren’t academic Graduates and they are hungry for learning this applied science and are able to dump biases learned from reading myths in body language books quicker than most. We will look at this deeper to (in)validate my theory and report back. Any other theories? #police #intelligence #military #behavioranalysis #emotionalintelligence #liedetection #deceptiontraining #SCAnR #SCAnS #MSc https://lnkd.in/em28TqP2

Hack your heart rate with your breathing. When you're stressed, your body releases hormones like adrenaline, cortisol, and norepinephrine. These hormones trigger the "fight or flight" response, which prepares you to deal with the situation. Your heartrate and blood pressure will increase to charge your organs and muscles for action. If you decide you don’t need the energy being generated by your sympathetic nervous system it is difficult to directly affect your haemodynamics (heart operation). What you can do though is regulate your heartrate using breath techniques. At its simplest level it’s about breathing deeply and slowly using your diaphragm - research suggests around 6 breaths per minute (see link below), which is about 5 seconds in and 5 seconds out. According to this study, “‘autonomically optimised respiration’ would appear to be in the band of 6–10 breaths per min, with an increased tidal volume that is achieved by diaphragmatic activation” (rather than thoracic, upper chest breathing). This can enhance autonomic reactivity to help you counter physical and mental stress. My resting heartrate is 60 beats per minute so I find it helpful to use my heartbeat rather than seconds - 5 heartbeats in… 5 heartbeats out - as the shorter breaths are easier when stress levels are high (eg around 3.5 seconds in and same out when my heart rate is 90 per minute) though my heart rate quickly starts to reduce, leading to longer breaths. The added benefit of this is that it prompts me to be sensitised and mindful of the sensation of my heartbeat. You can place a finger in your pulse until you master this. In addition you could add in what are known as ‘vagal manoeuvres’ which are physical actions that stimulate the vagus nerve to slow a fast heart rate. A popular technique is the Valsalva manoeuvre. While sitting or lying down, take a breath, then push it out against a closed mouth and nose while straining a little (unless you have health issues - in which case consult your doctor first). Hold for 15–20 seconds, then open your mouth or nose and breathe out smoothly. Then move to the regulated breathing outlined above. What is ‘Fear’? Fear doesn’t become ‘fear’ at the point at which we label it with a word. Fear is an innate reactive state that follows a signal that resembles something in our emotional alert database (stored from evolution[eg snakes] or experience[eg someone who resembles a previous attacker]) that represents a danger that may threaten our wellbeing and safety. It initiates a freeze reaction, quickly morphing into an orchestrated array of physiological changes that prepares us to flee. We can, of course, construct or trigger our own fear with our imagination and dreams about perceived real-time (now) dangerous situations (eg a dream about falling from a high building), and the fear state that arises is innate - it happens to us - it isn’t ‘constructed’… it’s the fear trigger that is constructed in our dream. This fear emotion differs from ‘anxiety’ though, as anxiety is often a lower intensity state generated by thoughts or ruminations about possible future dangers. Once we become conscious of the physiological changes and the emerging reaction we have the capacity to then label it (as fear… ie ‘danger alert’) and choose to interrupt the programmed reaction (or not) and decide instead to respond appropriatly to the context and our goals. Buddhists suggest that this emotional intelligence is about increasing the space between the spark(trigger) and the flame(response) - referring to this as the sacred pause. Viktor E. Frankl reinforced this wisdom by suggesting that “Between stimulus and response, there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.” We can do this by becoming aware of the sensations in the body that start to happen as soon as our subconscious mind senses danger. This is a skill, though it’s not easy. Nature doesn’t help us either, as we have evolved to not interfere with our emotions. Some useful tips here on getting yourself into the ‘now’ and out of any ruminations. Nice post Luke. 👍 #emotionalintelligence EmotionIntell

Overthinking keeps you stuck. It’s time to break free. Here's how: 7 Powerful Strategies to Stop Overthinking: 1. Practice mindfulness: ↳ Set aside 5-10 minutes daily to focus on your breath or surroundings. ↳ This trains your mind to stay present and reduces mental chatter. 2. Challenge negative thoughts: ↳ When overthinking strikes, ask "Is this thought helpful?" ↳ If not, consciously redirect your focus to something constructive. 3. Use a thought journal: ↳ Write down recurring thoughts to externalise them. ↳ Often reduces their power and provides clarity. 4. Engage in physical activity: ↳ Exercise for 30 minutes daily to release endorphins. ↳ Shifts your mental state and provides a natural mood boost. 5. Set a decision deadline: ↳ Give yourself a specific timeframe to make choices. ↳ Once the deadline passes, commit fully to your decision. 6. Use the 5-4-3-2-1 grounding technique: ↳ Name 5 things you see, 4 you touch, 3 you hear, 2 you smell, and 1 you taste. ↳ Quickly redirects your focus to the present moment. 7. Implement the "5-year rule": ↳ Ask yourself, "Will this matter in 5 years?" ↳ If not, it's likely not worth overthinking now. Your mind deserves peace. Life is too short to be trapped in endless thought loops. ♻️ Share to help someone break free from overthinking. 🔔 Follow Luke Tobin for more helpful content.

The Six Channel Analysis System (SCAnS) is a powerful tool for understanding and interpreting both verbal and non-verbal behaviour. It covers six key channels: 🫁 Psychophysiology: Observing physical changes like heart rate or sweating can reveal underlying emotions. 🕺 Body Language: Gestures, posture, and movements often speak louder than words. 🤨 Facial Expressions: Subtle shifts in expressions can indicate true feelings. 📢 Voice: Tone, pitch, and volume changes provide clues to emotions. 🗣️ Interactional Style: How someone interacts, pauses, hesitations, or flow, can suggest stress or deception. 📝 Verbal Content: The actual words used, including slips and inconsistencies, are crucial. Understanding these channels helps you navigate both personal and professional interactions more effectively. For instance, in a negotiation, SCAnS allows you to detect subtle hesitations in body language or voice that may indicate doubt, even if the words spoken are agreeable. This insight enables you to probe deeper, adjust your strategy, and make more informed and emotionally intelligent decisions. By mastering SCAnS, you can see beyond the surface, ensuring clearer communication, stronger relationships, and better decision-making in all aspects of life. Whether you're leading a team, closing a deal, or simply trying to understand a friend, reading and interpreting verbal and non-verbal behaviour significantly enhances your ability to connect with others on a deeper level. #bodylanguage #behavioralscience #communication #selfdevelopment #deception #credibility #emotionalintelligence #SCAnS #liedetection #peopleskills
