Prime Minister and Veterans’ Minister announce ‘OP PROSPER’ to boost veterans’ employment. On Friday, at a Veterans Connect event held at a military museum, the Prime Minister convened with veterans and businesses, unveiling OP PROSPER - a comprehensive employment service designed to assist veterans in transitioning into civilian employment following their departure from the Armed Forces. OP PROSPER will be backed by £2.1 million in new funding. The scheme will support veterans in securing high paid jobs, where they can hone the skills that they developed in the military in key sectors that are helping to boost the economy. This includes areas like cyber and digital, manufacturing, energy and financial and professional services. Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Johnny Mercer said: "Our veterans leave the military with an abundance of skills, and the tenacity and drive to continue achieving greatness. But for too long, too many have ended up in jobs that don’t fully harness their talents and abilities. That is why we’re introducing Op Prosper. By connecting veterans with employers, engaging industry bodies on the importance of hiring veterans, and strengthening their qualifications and skills, this Government will ensure more ex-servicemen and women are securing high quality and fulfilling employment. Hiring a veteran is one of the best business decisions a company can make, and OP PROSPER will help ensure this is realised by all employers across the country." The Government has committed to setting the standard for veterans' support, aiming to make the UK the top destination globally for former servicemen and women. This commitment includes allocating an additional £33 million in funding to support veterans over the next three years, with an additional £10 million designated in the 2023 Autumn statement specifically for enhancing veterans’ healthcare. In 2021, Op Courage was launched as a bespoke mental health support for veterans supported by professionals who are from or have experience of working with the military community, and over 30,000 veterans have used this service to date. Did you know that employing veterans could entitle you to tax relief under PAYE? Qualifying employers have the potential to receive annual benefits of up to £4,000 through the Employment Allowance, which can be used to offset National Insurance contributions. Employers with Reserve Forces personnel may receive up to £500 per year per Reservist via the Reservist Allowance. This not only leads to financial savings but also demonstrates solidarity with the Armed Forces community. Hiring veterans not only reduces PAYE taxes but also brings in valuable expertise. If you're a UK employer aiming to enhance your workforce while reducing PAYE taxes, considering hiring veterans could be beneficial. The government has launched a campaign to help improve veterans’ access to healthcare services, and opened applications to the £2.52 million Veterans Mobility Fund. Key Information: ● Government urges UK veterans to access specialist healthcare services through their GPs ● Veterans can now apply for mobility grants through Help for Heroes to increase independence and choice ● GP practices are encouraged to become ‘Veteran Friendly’ and refer patients who have served in the armed forces to dedicated NHS pathways. Kate Davies, National Director for Armed Forces Health, NHS England, said: "It’s really important that veterans who need treatment and support get the help they need and the best way to do this is to register with a GP practice and tell them you’ve served. Along with helping to ensure that veterans get the support that’s right for them, this means that GPs and other healthcare professionals can better understand any health problems, particularly those related to a person’s time in the Armed Forces. My message to veterans is that it’s never too late to tell your GP practice you’ve served; it doesn’t matter how long you served for or when you left the Armed Forces, sharing this information may be relevant to your health and care, now or in the future, and the NHS is here for you." Defence Minister Andrew Murrison encourages LGBT veterans to apply for restorative measures following the Etherton Review. The UK Ministry of Defence (MOD) and the Office for Veterans' Affairs (OVA) jointly commissioned an independent review to better understand the impacts and implications of the policy that homosexuality was incompatible with life in HM Armed Forces between 1967 and 2000. The government acknowledges that the historic policy prohibiting homosexuality in the armed forces was unacceptable and wrong. The government published the formal response to the review on 13 December 2023.
