We can all play a part this month, and beyond, in helping people to speak up and feel confident they will be listened to. People-centred interpreting services play a valuable role in supporting people of all cultures and language backgrounds to do just this. This national campaign highlights the need for organisations, groups, institutions and all employers to foster a culture of listening to their employees to encourage real communication. Freedom to Speak Up Guardians support workers to speak up when they feel that they are unable to in other ways and there are over 1,000 Freedom to Speak Up Guardians in the NHS and independent sector organisations, national bodies and elsewhere. There are more than 70 million deaf people worldwide. More than 80% of them live in developing countries. Collectively, they use more than 300 different sign languages. The United Nations, International Day of Sign Languages is a unique opportunity to support and protect the linguistic identity and cultural diversity of all deaf people and other sign language users. Sign-language use signifies unity, connection and community – all of which are extremely important to us at Enable2 and our work.
