Today marks one week since our first-ever EQ Conference!🥂   Over 200 colleagues gathered at Carlowrie Castle to reflect on EQ’s journey over the past 20 years and to look ahead at the future. For many, this was the first chance to connect in person with colleagues from our 11 office locations.🏢   We heard from Warren Mead, CEO of Sumer, who shared his vision for the wider Sumer group. As we continue our rapid growth, discussing how to collaborate effectively as an organisastion is essential. InsightsMarcus Wylie led an engaging session on building a positive culture and how we communicate, which was both insightful and enjoyable!   Following some fun team-building activities with Maximillion, we returned to our seats for an inspiring talk by Miles Hilton-Barber. He shared how his blindness has positively transformed his life and opened up about his many adventures, emphasising the power of a changed mindset. 👏   The fantastic day wrapped up with a team dinner and even some impromptu karaoke, a great day for everyone here at EQ!💙

📈One of our partners, Gordon W Buist, recently shared his insight on succession planning and tax considerations. His post sheds valuable light on the topic, especially the importance of correctly structuring transactions involving loan notes to manage tax liabilities effectively. As he points out, an election under TCGA 1992, s 169Q can be a valuable tool in crystallising Capital Gains Tax (CGT) when Business Asset Disposal Relief (BADR) is available.   At EQ, we’re here to guide you through these complexities and help ensure your exit plans are tax-efficient and aligned with your goals.   💬 Feel free to reach out to discuss how we can support your succession planning.   #SuccessionPlanning #ExitStrategy #TaxPlanning #BusinessAdvice #Accountants

EQ Partner | CA and CTA (Fellow) | Specialist tax and business advice to family and owner-managed businesses, including corporate groups.

Many businesses are currently restructuring and accelerating their exit plans, leading to an increase in succession planning. A crucial technical point to consider is that when a seller receives a loan note as part of their consideration, the gain is rolled into the loan notes under the reorganisation legislation and becomes taxable at the date of repayments at the prevailing rates at that time. It's important to note that an election under TCGA 1992, s 169Q to crystallize an upfront CGT liability is only possible when claiming business asset disposal relief (BADR). Structuring the transaction correctly can ensure the crystallization of a CGT disposal even if BADR is not available. Please get in touch if I can be of any assistance.
