About us
Equality in Tourism is non-profit working to make the tourism industry more just, sustainable and equitable. We advocate for the transformation of gender relations in destinations and tourism organisations. We have created a global network dedicated to ensuring that women have an equal voice in the industry, and share the benefits of tourism worldwide. We use this network of experts to provide gender specialist advice, capacity building and innovation, promoting a human rights approach to tourism business and development. As part of our work in the industry, we have launched the first Gender Equality Award in the tourism and hospitality industry, presented annually at the ITB Berlin. This award recognises leaders within the industry who display excellence in their commitment to gender equality. We reward their work and highlight best practises for replication and development across the industry, encouraging tourism businesses to integrate gender equality into their policies and work practises. We're proud of the work we do in the tourism industry and welcome the opportunity to collaborate with like-minded partners who share our vision for a more just, sustainable and equitable future for all.

How is climate change impacting women in destinations? 🌍 Our Gender, Tourism & Climate Change roundtable discussion will dig into this critical question, reflecting on current challenges and solutions for the future. This is a much-needed and overdue conversation, as we all work to create a just transition to a sustainable industry. The event will bring together travel experts, workers in tourism, academics and climate activists, to kickstart collaborations and prompt further research. Could your voice be a valuable addition? 🗣 If you're interested in attending and can make it to London on 28th November, email Dr. Stroma Cole on stroma@equalityintourism.org for more details. 📷 Photo of seaweed farmers in Zanzibar by Natalija Gormalova / Climate Visuals Countdown #ClimateJustice #GenderJustice #SustainableTourism #WomenInTourism #ResponsibleTourism #ClimateAction

In Madhya Pradesh, women empowerment is one of the seven core values in the government’s Responsible Tourism Mission. ♀️ On a recent trip to India, our Associate Elisa Spampinato saw firsthand how this value is being lived out through initiatives by the local tourism board. From the changing status of women who've become homestay owners, to the self-defence programme helping local women feel safer – Elisa has written about some of those initiatives and their impact for us: https://buff.ly/3YvaOdU Have a read and you'll understand why Madhya Pradesh Tourism has twice been shortlisted for our Gender Equality Champion of the Year Award. 👏 #GenderEquality #IndiaTourism #WomenInTourism #WomenInTravel #ResponsibleTourism

✨ What we see are patterns of inequality being reproduced and reinforced rather than reduced, but there is a possibility to turn the ship around ✨ At our recent event on the Just Sustainability Transition in Tourism, Dr. Stroma Cole discussed her groundbreaking research highlighting the direct link between the slow onset of #climatechange and #gender-based violence. She explored how global crises, the AI revolution, and algorithmic job management are poised to impact men and women differently. By placing justice at the heart of the conversation, Dr. Cole calls for a focus on #feminist alternative tourism economics to address the root causes of gender inequality. Does community tourism really empower women? 🤔 Of course, many initiatives offer employment opportunities and generation of income. But these factors don't automatically lead to a change in gender relations. As GEMA MARTÍNEZ-GAYO reflects for Alba Sud, "the presence of women in an activity does not ensure that it is carried out in terms of equality." ✨ Spotlight on Kenya Association of Women in Tourism ✨ How are they creating change for their members and other women in the industry? Some highlights from their year so far include… ⭐ Hosting a “Tourism in Africa: The Role Women Play” conference, featuring a host of esteemed speakers in fields like climate, safety, technology and accessibility. ⭐ Organising their first Hospitality Graduate Summit, bringing together graduating students and employers in a relaxed environment. ⭐ Signing an MOU with the Strathmore University School of Tourism and Hospitality -STH. This will create opportunities such as customised training, fundraising for county-level climate action projects, and research for policy advocacy. Part of our network of associates, it's great to hear about the progress and impact KAWT is making. 👏 We'd love to know – which organisations are raising the voice of women in tourism in your country? 📷 CEO JACQUELINE KALI and Strathmore University Deputy Vice Chancellor Academic and Student Affairs Elizabeth Gachenga sign the MOU, as School Dean David Chiawo, PhD looks on. #WomenInTourism #WomenInTravel #GenderEquality #KenyaTourism #SustainableTourism
