Yesterday we attended a thought-provoking panel discussion run by the @Competence Centre for Workplace Equity on driving Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI). Rebecca Thomas from our Policy team joined other panellists in sharing her perspectives on the evolving responsibilities and opportunities for professional bodies. The DEI summit explored how organisations like the EHRC are shaping the future of workplace diversity by equipping professionals with the competencies and skills needed to navigate DEI challenges effectively.

Our updated Code of Practice will help service providers and legal advisors to act in accordance with the law. We are currently consulting on our updated Code so that it reflects and clarifies the law as it stands. The Code of Practice was first published in 2011 and this area of the law has evolved significantly since then. The consultation is open to everyone – both organisations and individuals. We particularly want to hear from those who use the Code of Practice to find out how easy it is to understand and whether it meets the needs of those who use it. The Worker Protection (Amendment of Equality Act 2010) Act came into force on 26th October 2024. This means employers have a legal duty to protect their employees and prevent sexual harassment in the workplace. Sexual harassment in the workplace remains a persistent issue and employers must ensure their staff are safeguarded at work. We have responded to His Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire and Rescue Services’ (HMICFRS) PEEL (Police) Inspector Framework 2025-27. As Britain's equality regulator, we are working to prevent and address race and sex-based discrimination, harassment and victimisation in fire services, police and armed forces in England, Scotland and Wales. It's important that all police forces proactively follow equality and human rights laws. We have made several recommendations in our consultation response around how HMICRFRS can take steps to tackle discrimination, harassment and victimisation, as well as how they can ensure use of emerging technology, such as facial recognition, does not breach equality and human rights law. 🚨 Sexual harassment in the workplace remains a persistent issue, especially for women and the LGBTQ+ community. One in 10 UK workers experience repeated sexual harassment in the workplace from the same person. 57% of workplace sexual harassment victims took action to deal with their experience. However, this most commonly resulted in victims looking for a new job. (Source: Government Equalities Office’s sexual harassment survey (2020)) 📝 We recently updated our technical guidance for preventing sexual harassment in the workplace. Our clear, actionable guidance explains your legal responsibilities as an employer and offers practical steps you can take to prevent sexual harassment in your workplace. The Worker Protection Act came into force on 26th October 2024, so it was important we updated the guidance - to reflect changes made to the law. This week we attended the European Network of National Human Rights Institutions General Assembly in Brussels. We discussed our recent work and networked with other NHRIs to talk about upcoming priorities and future opportunities to work collaboratively to strengthen human rights work.
Today is the day 🤗 – we can't wait for the #ENNHRI2024 General Assembly to start later this afternoon! Running until tomorrow lunchtime, over 90 representatives from 45+ #NHRIs across #Europe are coming to Brussels for the occasion. Each year, the General Assembly gathers the network to consider 💭 crucial network matters - looking both back and forward. Alongside reporting on the activities of the last few months, we’ll kick off the development of our upcoming Strategic Plan 🎯 and hold elections 🗳️ for future ENNHRI office holders. In addition, we'll look at how #NHRIs are responding to the #humanrights impacts of securitisation. The next two days are also an ideal moment to (re)connect with new and familiar faces from across the network 🤝 . This morning already saw Chairs and representatives of our 9 Working Groups meeting to discuss their work. Later, they’ll present this 🗣 to the General Assembly. In addition, an induction for new heads of institutions allowed them to meet ENNHRI's Board and find out more about ENNHRI membership 🌐 . The induction forms part of ENNHRI’s Leadership Programme. Stay tuned and follow #ENNHRI2024 👀 for all the developments today and tomorrow!
