📢 As industry professionals, your participation is crucial! The UK Music Ltd 2024 Workforce Diversity Survey closes on 29th Feb. Share your insights and help shape a more inclusive future: https://lnkd.in/d-QDSbce "We are delighted that the UK Music 2024 Workforce Diversity Survey now features two new ESEA categories, acknowledging the significance of East and South East Asian representation. Historically, the 'Asian' category in the UK mainly represented the South Asian community. This development allows us to gauge the impact of our efforts in ESEA Music and provides data on the behind-the-scenes contributions of ESEA individuals for the first time. A milestone for ESEA Music that marks a significant move towards enhanced representation and visibility in the UK music industry!" – Tiger Hagino Reid (ESEA Music Co-Founder) Together, we can amplify ESEA voices and pave the way for greater diversity and visibility in the music industry! Thank you for your continued support and commitment to diversity! 🌟 #ESEAMusic #DiversityMatters #MusicIndustry #MusicBusiness #UKMusic #UKMusicIndustry #ESEARepresentation #MusicDiversitySurvey #ESEA
ESEA Music
Musicians
A community led by and for ESEA (East & Southeast Asian) music industry professionals & artists who are based in the UK.
About us
Established in September 2021, ESEA Music is a community led by and for UK-based East & Southeast Asian and music industry professionals from XL Recordings, Giant Artist Management, Sony, AWAL, Platoon and more. As individuals we have all felt the need for kinship as visible representation of ESEA (East & Southeast Asian) people across the arts, media, politics and certainly the music business is lacking. As well as providing a supportive network and a sense of belonging, it is our aim to create better representation and raise awareness of ESEA professionals and artists within the UK music industry. With the rise of underground and mainstream artists of ESEA descent in the UK breaking through, it feels timely to build a network to not only support the existing professionals and the new talent coming through but to pass down our wisdom to the next generation of ESEA professionals and artists. ESEA is a diverse community, and we respect the differences between our regional culture and are here to foster better understanding of different forms of experience and discriminations that have been faced. Whilst creating space for ourselves we also stand alongside other POC communities in solidarity. There is a nuance to the British Asian experience; in the UK, the word ‘Asian’ has traditionally stood for South Asian, while the opposite is true of the Asian American identity, where there is much more visibility of ESEA people. In the last couple of years, the acronym, which stands for East & Southeast Asian, has gained popularity in the UK, galvanized by the Stop Asian Hate and Black Lives Matter movements, through the organising of community groups.

The Music Managers Forum (MMF) is the world’s largest community of music managers, dedicated to educating, informing, and representing UK managers. It also offers a valuable network for sharing experiences, opportunities, and information. We are excited to announce that our member, Hide Whone, is on the ballot for the 2024 MMF Board Election! Hide shares, “I have been in artist management for close to 20 years, working with a wide range of artists—frontline artists, songwriters, producers, and a label repertoire owner. After running my own independent management company for 6 years, including through the challenges of COVID, I’ve learned how to maintain a fluid yet efficient company and roster. Understanding both the needs of a business owner and the responsibilities of representing artists is essential. I’m keen to learn more and push agendas that benefit managers, especially those in similar situations to mine, where the day-to-day logistics can be overwhelming." "As a proud member of ESEA Music, I aim to continue representing our community within the MMF Board and support our ongoing work in spotlighting ESEA professionals and artists in the UK music industry." We encourage ESEA Music members who are also MMF members to support Hide by casting your vote. Voting closes on September 13th, so don’t miss the opportunity! Visit themmf.net to place your votes now. Thank you for your support!

We’re proud to partner with esea contemporary on an exclusive event to celebrate the Year of the Wood Dragon. We welcome the ESEA community alongside supporters, collaborators, and partners from Manchester and beyond. This inaugural event showcases the new exhibition Jane Jin Kaisen: Halmang. Presented in the historic Market Buildings — once part of the Victorian Smithfield Fish Market — the exhibition connects its location with Kaisen's ancestral ties to Jeju Island, where her mother and grandmother made a living as haenyeo, the island’s women sea divers who harvest seafood from the ocean. This exhibition was conceived by Xiaowen Zhu and curated by Dot Zhihan Jia, with support from Arts Council England, GMCA, and the Danish Arts Foundation. The public programme is in partnership with the School of Digital Art (SODA), Manchester Metropolitan University. Alongside a private viewing of Halmang, you’ll indulge in a captivating live performance from the talented singer and composer Hinako Omori. Known for her unique musical style, Omori's latest album, "stillness, softness…," showcases a shift towards introspection and a mastery of the synthesizer. Audiences can expect a blend of hypnotic, synth-drive, dreamy music and meditative melodies. Experience Omori's artistry, characterized by seamless transitions and an intimate atmosphere, as she guides listeners through a journey of self-discovery during this special live performance. Savor the evening with delicious canapés, complimentary drinks, and an after party at Hello Oriental, where the celebration continues with DJ Stan Chow. From being unseen to forging a vibrant presence, the journey of East and Southeast Asian (ESEA) representation in British music has been complex. Tiger Hagino Reid's reflections highlight this evolution and the emergence of ESEA Music, a community reshaping narratives and fostering inclusivity within the industry. In the past, ESEA representation in British popular culture was scarce, often limited to a few figures like Yoko Ono or Mutya Buena, leading to misconceptions and misrepresentations. Yet, there's a palpable shift today. Artists like Rina Sawayama are breaking barriers, expanding award criteria, and redefining what it means to be part of the music scene as an ESEA individual. Founded in 2021, ESEA Music has become a pivotal space for over 400 members, nurturing connections, collaboration, and activism. Through their shared experiences, from feeling 'othered' in professional spheres to finding strength in diasporic connections, the nuances of the ESEA journey in music unfold. The '(Re)Orientated' survey, drawing from Edward Said's 'Orientalism,' offers a groundbreaking insight into the lives of ESEA professionals. Survey responses echo diverse experiences within our community—struggles with stereotypes rooted in colonialism and the necessity for diverse teams supporting artists' authentic expressions without tokenization. It emphasizes the significance of inclusivity and genuine representation in shaping the industry. ESEA Music's journey underscores the power of community spaces. Through mentorship, gatherings, and initiatives, it paves the way for representation, supporting artists in truthful expression, and acknowledging the diversity of identities within our community. Together, we're reshaping the narrative, amplifying voices, and building a more representative and authentic industry.
