What's the difference between Human-Centered AI and Community-Centered AI? This week Emmie Hine from the EI Network dives into the case for community-centered AI in our community post! A little sneak peak into Emmie's thinking: "In recent years, human-centered artificial intelligence (HCAI) has become the dominant paradigm in ethical AI, embraced by research institutions, corporations, and government bodies. HCAI promises to make AI that is good for humans, but how it does so remains under-defined. Despite its widespread adoption, conflicting definitions of HCAI muddy the waters and make it impossible to usefully operationalize. Today, I’ll explore HCAI’s shortcomings and talk about why we need to shift towards a concept of AI that is more community-centered rather than individualistic." One of the core components of the EI Network’s mission is to bring together professionals in Responsible AI to share expertise, experiences, and best practices in the pursuit of innovative solutions and critical thought. One way we create the space to enable this collaboration is to give a platform to the voices within our community by publishing a monthly post from an EI Network member. This month we have the opportunity to hear from George Chamoun and his experience founding Fairo, a platform whose mission is enabling successful and responsible AI adoption! #einetwork #responsibleai #businessleaders #aiethics #businesscase https://lnkd.in/giGdRGm8

Humans at work are complicated. Managing yourself at work is hard, and so is managing and leading teams. We all inherently understand this, which is why people and leadership development is such a fascinating field, supported by a massive industry offering coaching, training, workshops, and countless other resources aimed at boosting productivity while balancing employee well-being (or so we hope). Add AI-agents into the equation and there is one more element of complexity. It's one worth staying up late for 💪
Had to stay up late to talk to my peers at Ethical Intelligence and really love this one. As I speak to the market in Australia, most of the conversations boil down to #risk, which to me is an innovation killer and we’re actually running the risk of falling behind. The best strategy of growth is #human #orgdesign approach which establishes #confidence ⛳️

This week, we’re saying hello to GPT-4o (the o standing for omni) - Open AI's most recent model capable of responding to audio, visual, and text prompts in real-time. GPT-4o is designed to be more powerful, versatile, and human-like than its predecessors. Long story short, it’s an impressive feat of technological development. But, as we in Responsible AI & Ethics are all very familiar with, it’s never just about the tech. Although these advancements bring a mix of excitement and nerves to the scene, it’s important to not get caught up in the hype of the moment and instead look at the whole picture of GPT-4o, i.e. the human impact. AI can be risky business, but it doesn’t have to be. Although we often stress in this newsletter that ethics is more than risk mitigation, it is important to now and again deep dive into this essential side of Responsible AI. Risk may be considered from several dimensions or perspectives. We might consider risk from from a business perspective, such as the risk of malpractice undermining trust, or the risk of reputational ruin; an outcomes perspective, as with the risk of a technology exacerbating existing structural injustices, or the risk of unintended effects; and a use perspective, i.e., the risk of a technology being used by malicious actors. One of the central objectives of responsible AI practices to harness the benefits of AI while mitigating the potential for negative outcomes. Considered in terms of risk, the idea is to reduce the risks associated with designing, implementing or using a particular technology by actively safeguarding against harms and protecting what we value. Lately, we’ve been talking a lot about trust. We’ve covered what makes an AI system trustworthy, why openness in AI is critical for trust in the Responsible AI profession, and even how transparency can be used as a tool in building trust. However, trust is a complicated matter, as there are many ways to build and measure it, so there’s still much left to discover. Last edition we focused on how transparency can help create trust specifically in AI systems. In this edition, we are going to shift focus onto how accountability can help create trust in organizations. Have you ever asked someone why they trust another person? A common to response to this question will be “I trust them because I count on that person doing what they say they will do”. There is a layer of transparency in this statement of course, as it implies that the person shares their intentions and plans of action. But there’s also another, deeper layer to this. Not only does the person transparently share what their plans are, but they are accountable for those plans. It is one thing to say you will do something, it is something else entirely to do it. In other words, this is the ethical value of accountability in action. When it comes to building trust in companies deploying and selling AI solutions, this factor of accountability is absolutely critical. However, despite the importance of accountability in AI, there is a significant and dangerous gap currently widening in the market. Which is why this week we will be diving into what is causing this accountability gap and how we can start to fix it. Last edition we discussed trust in AI. This week we are building off the concept to dive into one of the core builders of trust: transparency. We’ve all heard the claim that ‘transparency breeds trust’ before, but in the digital era it carries more weight than ever before. We no longer expect transparency from just individuals in business, but from the technology we use as well. As a matter of fact, 94% of consumers state their loyalty to a brand only if it is transparent, and 73% say they are even willing to pay more for a completely transparent product. Transparency in business is the ability to ‘look behind the curtains’, the process by which working procedures are opened to examination and scrutiny. When we demand transparency from a company, we are asking for actionable proof of whether or not the company is open and honest about internal operations. Demanding transparency from technology works in the same way - we require proof that the technology does what it is claimed to do, and does so ethically. So if transparency breeds trust in technology, how do we foster transparency in the first place?
